the HDMI out is useless it doesn't have the power todo 720p let alone 1080p
you would be lucky to get decent performance at 1024x768 with the specs on this
still not bad for 25bucks but nothing to rave over

I don't think so, because i have tried several model of ipad clone with the exact same cpu to be able to play 720p mkv file quite well

That thing should work ... for basic tasks. Indeed it's good that anyone can afford that.

They aren't giving it away to students to watch movies on, they are giving it to them so they can learn. You don't need 1080p playback to use it as a learning device. The HDMI port makes the most sense because most low income students that would need a $25 PC are more likely to have an HDTV in their home than a computer monitor.

holy schmeezus thats a tiny pc, I would gladly settle for one 3-4 times the size (perhaps the size of a basic mobile phone these days, so it easily fits in a pocket) that has 2-4 USB ports, HDMI and wifi. in that size you could probably double up on the CPU speed/cores and ram size too.

Necropost!

The Raspberry Pi running Quake 3!

No news about release or anything though.

Awesome, I took a look at their other video too. It looks like they've increased the size a little bit, but they say that is just for the Alpha boards and they size will go back down. They've also added just a plain old Composite video output, a great idea if they plan to give these to low income area, as it definitely ensures that any TV can be used.

From Wikipedia

The Raspberry Pi is a single-board computer designed by the Raspberry Pi Foundation that is intended to stimulate the teaching of basic computer science in schools. An early prototype version of the computer was mounted in a package the same size as a USB memory stick, and had a USB port on one end with an HDMI port on the other; Shipping versions are planned to be credit card sized. Two versions are planned, a Model A with 128MB RAM, one USB port and no network port, and a Model B with 256MB RAM, two USB ports and 10/100 wired Ethernet[1]. The Raspberry Pi provides an ARM processor which is suitable for running Linux for a targeted estimated price of $25 (approx. £15) for a pre-configured system (Model A), cheap enough to give to a child to do whatever he or she wants with it.[2][3][4] The prototype is part of a venture by the Raspberry Pi Foundation.

has potential. probably bring PC on a stick for 100$ with storage and everything. Needs BT and a monitor out.

BT for keyboard, mouse

sweet, should be able to run android as well, and therefore many many apps as well. I've seen apps for overclocking various phones, so I'm sure it wouldn't be hard to do the same for this. could mount one of these in a laptop style case and have a droid netbook with pretty sweet battery life. add a 32gb or even 64gb (dunno if it'll support that much) SD card and you'd have plenty of space for apps and the like and could use it as a mp3/video player. pretty sweet for $25, i'd guess maybe $40 at most for the one with more ram, Ethernet, etc. might even run win8.

looking forward to updates on this micro pc.

edit: just subbed to their youtube page

Yeah, they have increases the size a little bit to add more functionality. Credit card sized still is pretty impressive. The first design was extremely minimualistic with connecters, but I think they realized that might help with the size a little, but it hurt with the functionality a lot.

Ye, you could push 2x the frequency on some of the phones and run it like a boss. Overclocking is a viable option but not on the phones because battery life is an issue...

No point in bumping a news thread imo, so I'll put it here!

Happy New Year!

We've built our first small batch of production boards. Apart from a minor error in the PCB design, they work very nicely, so we've decided to make ten of them available for auction on eBay. We have parts in stock for our first 10,000 units, and expect to be in volume production by the end of January.

As always, for more details, check out our website at:

http://www.raspberrypi.org

Eben Upton
Executive Director, Raspberry Pi Foundation

Links to the auctions here and here.

Also a pic of the final thing!

So cute! :D
