The ADATA XPG Spectrix S40G is the first M.2 SSD with adjustable RGB lighting effects. It not only looks great, but performs well, too. Thanks to 3.3 GB/s read and 2.3 GB/s writes, delivered real-life performance is comparable to the fastest NVMe SSDs on the market.

The 8200 Pro uses Phison does it not? This is the first time I have heard about Realtek's 8 channel controller. Is there any other NVME drives that have that controller?

I wonder, does having the LEDs on affect heat and throttling? Does turning them off make it throttle later?

No, it uses Silicon Motion SM2262en controller. But I'm with you on the rest.

Highly doubt it. LEDs are highly efficient and the ones in this drive are so small and also isolated by plastic. I will be surprise if they use more than .5W and at that efficiency I doubt they generate more than 0.03W of heat.

LEDs have caused heat issues on SSDs, so I wouldn't be so sure. I mean, it can be so bad the drive completely crashes and won't respond until it is cooled down and power cycled.

I'm not saying it would cause a problem on this SSD, but I'd like to see every SSD with LEDs to be tested both with and without the LEDs on to weed out the ones that might have heat issues caused by the LEDs.

Good suggestion, I'll test this tomorrow

Makes me wonder if these NVME's with large heatsinks full of RGB will have issues in a bunch of mobos/case setups

My front NVME already has a motherboard provided heatsink, and my rear mounted one is damn close to the case (and on a strange angle, its not flat)

Specs sound impressive, and like the idea of some RGB on a drive. Nice effort in design.

I have one on my Asrock board, so far not much trouble with it.

I checked temperatures with RGB on vs. off.

Writing at fixed 800 MB/s: +1°C difference
Idle: +1°C difference

Thanks, I figured there wasn't much of a difference on this drive because they didn't over do it with the LEDs. But it is something I'd like to see a test like this done on all SSDs with LEDs, because some manufacturers go way overboard with the LEDs.

Yeah I'll include this in future reviews

Can the RGB colors be linked to the NVME temperature or if it's throttled or the cache has overflowed?

I didn't realize it was RGB until the conclusion, more interested in seeing how it performed against the 8200 pro. I picked up 2 1tb ones for $125 each. Cheaper than getting a single 2tb for $280.

I can assure people that the 40w equivalent LED bulbs in my lamps at home make some heat. Although I think it is the conversion modules and not the leds themselves.

Can the RGB colors be linked to the NVME temperature or if it's throttled or the cache has overflowed?

Not likely for $160.

For $160 it is a no brainer to build it into the software as the thermistor and hooks are already there. It makes RGB useful rather than an extravagant pretty face.

When I purchase an M.2 for my 15" and 17" Gaming Laptops, it won't have any heat shields and it will be 2TB or better.

Intel's 2TB is less than $200. I'll buy that.

I'm more interested in STORAGE CAPACITY than highest theoretical speed.
