280GTX VS 8800 G92 Sli @1920x1200,..what is the better/more powerful gaming solution?

I would say that the 8800GTS G92 would in most games beat it by a bit, but I would pefer to get a GTX280 cause everyone knows SLI aswell as Xfire can be a glitchy pain in the arse, but if your on a budget, go SLI, but it seems you already have 2 of em, are you just curious!

Very curious after going from my 20 in widescreen to this 26in 1920x1200 monster.

oh yeah I forgot, hmmmm If it were me I would probably get a GTX280 and sell of the 2 G92's if you can just so later on you can get another GTX280 nd SLI it, or if you like ATI's new monsters, go with them, but I reckon you already have a kickarse rig anways man, at that resolution you should be getting nearly full potential from both of those cards, I hope that helps man, later

actually, they'll be about the same. Two gen92 8800gts equal a 9800gx2 which matches a gtx280 performance wise.

My guess is that SLI is better for your new monster monitor and its high resolution.
I've always read that SLI isn't much use if you have a small monitor or use low resolutions.

True, but two 8800GTS 512MB in SLi are unlikely to scale as well, so I would say the 280GTX would be the better option although I agree there would not be much of a difference, apart from the fact there are still games that are not SLi certified and also with the single GTX280 there are more upgrade options for the future.......plus I prefer single slot solutions (even though I have sli also)......but if I already had the G92's I wouldnt bother upgrading unless perhaps I was going for GTX260's in SLi but that simply would be overkill!

Edit: I have a 28 inch monitor and a GTX260, albeit at speeds probably above GTX280 stock...... runs everything just fine with it's 896MB DDR3.(baring in mind the G92's only have 512MB available....NOT 1GB)

and don't forget gtx280 provides you 1gb of Vram. it would be a lot faster with games that requires more than 512mb.

Ok, my question is, is the 512mb not doubled when 2 cards are in sli?
I was under the impression Nvidia cards ram is doubled in SLi.

nope, just 512... not doubled.

I would use the SLI 8800s, its a better value. Than when the 280 is replaced, upgrade.

according to W1zzard's review compilation, (and this is if you can overclock your GTS' to GTX speeds, which is quite easy to do), you are essentially running a 9800GX2, which overall performs actually 1% better across the field of games he tests

I like the simplicity of a single card, so I would say the GTX 280 would be better. Performance and probably price wise, the 8800GTS SLI would be better, not by much, but still better.

I still think with probable greater scaling issues of the SLi setup in relation to the GX2, the SLI would be perhaps, marginally slower but as he already has the 2 G92's I cannot see any reason to change if performance was the overriding issue.

Well the 2nd GT would be the cheaper option for a solution as fast as a decent GTX260 at a guess, obviously there are other factors to take into account....PSU........your motherboard has only 8 x 8 PCI-E lanes available for SLi but that would be only a small hit, over 16 x 16.

Well I went and bought a GTX280. Its a XFX that I picked up for a steal. Between Microsoft Live and a coupon, I spent a grand total of $265.00.
My initial impressions are good. Although I lost about 1000 pts. from 06', just about all of my games run smoother and look crisper Vantage is giving me an error, so I have yet to test that.

Now I need to figure out the best drivers for it...and look for a second for SLI

Hehe! I have the impression you were going for the GTX280 SLI anyway in any case and just wanted a confirmation that it wasn't a step back to have a single GTX280 until you could have the second, rather than thinking of it as a real upgrade over your previous setup.

That was a good deal anyway and I don't think you'll have any problems selling those GTSs for a little more than what you paid for the GTX280.

About the drivers I find it difficult to find any better than the 180.xx ones. The WHQL 180.48 are a good place to start, I don't know if any betas are better.

If a game has say 600 MB of texture data, it won't benefit from 2x 8800 GTS512 (will resort to compression). On the other hand, you are giving the game a much larger video memory with GTX 280. In Soviet SLI/CrossFire, 512 MB + 512MB = 512 MB.

i rather a single card, i cant be stuff messing around with sli drivers and all the crap they have, so a gtx 280 or even a 260 would be fine.... the main reason why i like me gtx280 so much is yes is got some balls to it but at idle it uses F-all power my rig at stock uses 124w torrenting
