285 sli vs 6970

had a quick look online not much there, any ideas guys?

If i remember correctly a 285SLI is about as powerful as a 4890CF... the 6970 is more than twice as powerful as the 4890CF, So by that logic the 6970 **should** be faster. it would also be a lot less power hungry.

Then again, some reviews put the 285SLI on par with with a 5850CF, and then the 5850CF at around 40% more powerful than the 6970... so i am really not sure...

They should be fairly comparable in performance tho.

If you are thinking of getting a 6970 as an upgrade, it definitely wouldn't be worth it unless you want lower energy bills.

Because it's an added expense with few games fully supporting the new features. It's only worth buying a new card if it comes with performance improvements.

Well, it will depend on scaling, but I'd say* that a single HD 6970 is about as powerful as two GTX 285 in SLI while consuming A LOT less power (I'd say almost 2.5 times less)

I'm basing this on comparing some old reviews from here and there, I can't guarantee any of it

I'd call it close to on par performance, with better ultra high res performance due to 2gb frame buffer, no possible scaling (SLi) issues, and it will use a metric shit-tonne less power.

see about getting 2x 6950's in CF, that would be a definite improvement, especially if you unlock the shaders.

Judging from some benches of the 295 vs 6970, and considering that the 285 sli is better than the 295, I'd have to agree that the two are on par.

If a pair of 6950s is out of your budget, as someone before me suggested, maybe a pair of 6870/560ti sli will serve you better? But to be honest, with your current setup I'd wait at least another generation before upgrading.

I'd either do that, or go all out on a top end Crossfire/SLI setup.
