My roommate asked my to look at his USB a friend of his burned some music on. It's a 2gig but could not find any files on it.

No worries right? buddy just messed up, I'll throw some stuff on there for him!

Well, that's when I discovered it only had 1MB storage capacity. ?

Tried to format? Would only allow 1mb.

How do I get it to recognize the full 2 gigs?

This one has me stumped. All my USB's were exactly the size they said they would be!

If you (or someone else) formatted it improperly, it could show up as much smaller. That happens all the time to me when I format USB disks as CDs and DVDs. If I try to reformat those using the GUI, I'll only be able to create a partition the size of the previous CD and not that of the entire flash drive.

If you don't care about your data, you can format it from the Windows command prompt (run as administrator):

Type "diskpart" to open diskpart
Type "list disk" to show all storage devices connected, Note the ID of the USB flash drive
Type "select disk #" (where # is the ID of your USB flash drive) to modify the disk
Type "clean" to erase the MBR
Type "create partition primary" to create a new MBR
Type "exit" to exit

Now your device will show up as an unformatted drive in "My Computer". Right click and use the format option to format it to its full capacity.

If this doesn't show the capacity you expect, then your flash drive is seriously broken or it's a scam. I have bought "32GB" SD cards over eBay that were actually 8MB cards with clever formatting to appear as 32GB. The steps above will show the true capacity. And yes, I did get my money back from that scam.

The flashes are years old and I have no idea how they have been handled. They are inexpensive enough that I am unwilling to spend any more time with them. Besides, it is most likely to be a lost cause.

linux has a good Gparted software. I always use linux to fix something that windows cant.

Download any live linux, burn on CD then run without installing. I always find linux mint to be the best although for some, ubuntu is there choice.

http://www.linuxmint.com/download.php

http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop
I am a Mint fan also. I have both on a couple of desktop Cruncher's, currently in storage, but I liked Mint and was just learning Ubuntu, when I had to move and now have no place for them, until I can get out of this hole.

linuxmint is based from ubuntu in which ubuntu is based from debian. I used ubuntu as my learning. But I found linuxmint to be more "furnished".

You could see here that linuxmint is more popular now that ubuntu

http://distrowatch.com/

whereas ubuntu was the number 1 before.

anyway for OP, I dont want to high jack his thread.

Honestly, I have fixed alot of USB, external hard drive, saved a lot of data for me and for a friend using linux. I always dual boot with linux cause linux can access windows but windows cant access linux.

you should try. It requires alot of reading but once you know the basics, it is fun to use. Now there is alot of supported Steam games on linux. AMD is also developing drivers now for linux which is great. In couple of years, who would want to pay for applications? whereas linux is generally free where some of the apps requires only "small" donations which is ok in my opinion inorder for the developer to keep going.

The simple way is to download and use this program -https://www.sdcard.org/downloads/formatter_4 - it has the option to resize to full capacity, and has worked on all my USB flash drives and SD cards, the whole process is done in seconds. Saved many thumb drives this way after making a bootable partition or Windows installer out of it.
