Hi,

i have a gigabyte PE667 Ultra2 motherboard and a Pentium M 3.06HT processor. In bios the cpu is recognized as 1.6 Pentium 4. In Windows XP (devicemanager) i can see 2 prozessors (3.06GhZ) but is running only at 1.6GHz. It´s a juperless board but supports 3.06HT processors. Any hints?

Thanks+Regards,

Is on your mainboard EIST enabled? It clocks your cpu down at idle
Another reason would be that the bios is too old, look for a bios upgrade

Extended/Enhanced (a word with "E") Intel-SpeedStep-Technology, the counter part of AMD's "Cool n quiet" makes your processor slower, when it isnt used at full load, it reduces frequency and voltage for less heat production.

Info

It has nothing to do with EIST.

* When running the CPU on Desktop, the default running speed is 133x12= 1.6Ghz

* On Desktop, change the FSB to 250 or higher, then the running speed will be at 250x12=3Ghz

I found this in an add selling a cpu like yours. It might be worth checking out.

Go to the power settings in control panel and make sure your 'power scheme' is set to Home/Office desk.

At the moment i can´t check any hints because i´m not at home.
The processor runs at 12x133MHz FSB is 533MHz. I can adjust the cpu host
from 100 to 350MHz. Actually he is set to 133 (automaticly).
but you know, i can´t change the multiplicator.

Your processor does support EIST btw, here's the link to it: http://www.intel.com/products/processor/pentiumm/index.htm

Read below, this is most likely what your problem is:

"Enhanced Intel SpeedStep® technology
Enhanced Intel SpeedStep® technology enables real-time dynamic switching of the voltage and frequency between two performance modes based on processor demand. This occurs by switching the system bus ratios, core operating voltage, and core processor speeds without resetting the system."

Here's how to tell for sure: Download CPU-Z http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads/12 and Prime95 http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads/114. Open CPU-Z and then run Prime95. While Prime95 is running monitor your CPU clock speed using CPU-Z.

No changes with prime95. In bios, no changes (speed step) are possible. I don´t know what i should do next.

Do you know anyone with a socket 478 mainboard and 478 processor?
You both could try switching your mainboard or processor and see, if this error occurs with the switched parts

Something is slowing it down, just look at the Vcore of 1.2V, that is not normal stock Vcore for that CPU. Sounds liek sonething somewhere is stepping that CPU down.

Before a 2.66 GHz P4 Northwood was installed and runs proper. What is the right Vcore for this cpu? I can change it in bios manually.

Thi is not a celeron! ;-) It´s not able to set the multiplier manually. on intels website i read, that the right vcore is 1,53-1,55 V but i only can change it to 1,35V maximum. i think, the processor is not compatible with this board? the board supports prozessors up to 3,06 GHz but no Pentium M prozessors? I don´t know.

No, stock Northwood Vcore is 1.525-1.55V. Are you using a Pentium M? If so that is why it is running half speed, they are not desktop CPU's. You need to have a mobo specifically made for Pentium M 478 boards and I am not even sure they make them. A Pentium M S478 CPU will run half speed in a desktop board.

The only other example I've seen of this is for laptops that have Pentium desktop chips in them; they are set to drop to half speed when unplugged, but when plugged in run at full speed. I'm not sure how helpful that is though...

Yeah, the Pentium 4 M is not a S479 so it will not fit in any Dothan based products. It is a true S478, just a mobile CPU. THe problem is the power config, that is why it is stock @ 1.2V. Only a laptop can get it up to speed properly. You could probably still sell it for a few bucks and save the dough for a future upgrade though.
