Got a 3060 for $500 in the shuffle, debating on whether or not to buy it as a short term upgrade for my 1070.

The 1070 is still viable, 500 for alow end card is ridiculous.

I agree, but I think my card may be acting up, my display lost signal a couple of days ago, and I had to restart the system.

Benchmark Scores My system matches standard results. I use benchmarks to set fan curves; I don't care about scores.
If pricing were normal, the 3060 would realistically be a $250-275 card. Remember that Nvidia announced the 3060 as a $329 card at launch. I doubt if a single AIB partner card sold at this price. $500 is still overpriced.

I bought a Sapphire Pulse Radeon RX 580 8GB card a year ago for $180 (down from the $230 launch price), the #2 card from that generation. The entry level 2017 card -- the RX 550 2GB -- was $79 at launch (April 2017) and was going for $65 a year ago.

For videogamers here in late July 2021, the best value for $500 is a new gen console: Xbox Series X or PS5. You're not going to pick up a GeForce RTX 3070 FE at $499 even if that's the official list price at Best Buy. There's zero inventory.

No, I upgraded my monitor last year though, and I have had it rarely seemingly turn off, and I just hit the power button and it comes right back, but this time it completely lost signal, I haven't attempted to diagnose it yet, and normally I would just wait until I was certain, but with the GPU market still being a mess I'm thinking it might be a better idea to buy, but the price is .

About a 40% (give or take) performance increase for $500 over your 1070.

It all depends on your needs. If you want something for sure to replace a possibly problematic card.... it's not an ideal purchase, but if it's been your only option and you're desperate to get something new.... it's hard to say go for it.

Aside from the potential trouble of my GPU failing, I also could use a performance increase, 2K is not kind to my 1070 in modern titles, and though I would prefer a 3070 or 3080, it is still a increase.

Well, you're not going to find a standalone $500 RTX 3070 or $800 RTX 3080 right now. The only way to acquire one without an insane markup is to buy a prebuilt system.

The cards exist however Nvidia and AMD are prioritizing GPU allocation to OEMs and system builders.

huh???@???!?!?!??!?!??!!??! why would the mrsp for a card at 329 even with fair pricing going though a extra company mean a much much lower price...? i agree with the consoles argument but brand new cards of the base refence shouldnt mean with extra hands = 20-35 % cheaper in under 1 year...

Made the decision to buy it, if the market recovers sooner than I think then I will regret the waste, but if this drags on for a while longer then I will be fine with the decision. Thanks for the input.

Nvidia's $329 is overpriced to start. They already knew the disastrous GPU marketplace would allow them to set a higher entry point.

If you look at this from a gamer's perspective, it's a piss poor value. In the form of a new gen console, you can get 4K gaming for $500.

The best thing about being an adult. If you want something just buy it. You can always sell it later and recoup half the cost ,hence your getting it at MSRP anyway. See so simple.

Yea, in the end I couldn't do it, thankfully it's the weekend so I was able to cancel the order before it shipped, now I just have to wait for the money to be transferred back, thanks again to all those who chimed in.

Benchmark Scores bench...mark? i do leave mark on bench sometime, to remember which one is the most comfortable. :o
nay .... although that one would be 25$ cheaper than my actual 1070 value when i got it ...

at 1440p a 1070 is still fine (well as long as not above 75hz tho ... depending the game ... )

edit: i was glad to not find that it was my GPU who was failing when i got issues ... (most likely PSU but i went "hell why not CPU/MOBO/RAM that would still be cheaper than a GPU anyway" )

The 1070 is still viable, 500 for alow end card is ridiculous.
The 3060 is nowhere near a low-end card. The last truly low-end card released was the GT 1030. The 3060 is the lowest element of the Ampere range, but is a good 1440p gaming card, which positions it in the higher-midrange, despite the x60 naming.

Got a 3060 for $500 in the shuffle, debating on whether or not to buy it as a short term upgrade for my 1070.
It's something that only your budget can answer. I recently bought a 2070 for a similar price because I wanted to - but then, I was upgrading from a 1650. The 1070 is still fine, imo. If you can sell it for a decent price, and your upgrade only costs you a minimal amount, go ahead. Otherwise, I'd pass. But again, you'll have to answer this question for yourself, as I have no way of knowing how much money you have for upgrades.

It's up to you to believe that, I don't.
Personally, I don't believe that everybody suddenly started to build gaming PCs. Nevertheless, graphics cards are still mostly out of stock basically everywhere. Until that changes, their value is going to stay way above MSRP, whether we like it or not. What I do believe is that the decline in crypto mining alone won't bring GPUs back in stock.

I guess manufactures will try to keep this as long as they can, easy way to earn money but as soon the crypto market crashes will be mountains of gpus to sell below msrp, just like 2014 and 2018 and they will have no way to keep this bs as people will buy second hand gpus a lot below msrp. Their bs will end and will be funny to watch, I have watched this in 2014 and 2018, and the same bs and excuses, shortage and so on, always the same story.
Well, at least the second hand market will be interesting to watch. As for new GPUs, their price will only come down once their availability grows. That way, board partners and stores won't have to sell them with such a huge mark-up as they're doing now. Whether this will happen within the current generation (Ampere/RDNA2), I have my doubts.

Erm hello the 3060 is low end.

Honestly Id say a 3070 or 6700 for a legit upgrade.

Thread is about " 3060 for $500, yay or nay?" Why did it turn into crypto talk?
