3080 tuf works sometimes maybe

I've had a week full of problems at my house...scammed RX 580, lost a system partition and now I have a 3080 tuf that is giving me fits. The card had been working fine for months with the exception of the ram getting hot. I don't think that is really a problem with this actual card...just the 3080 itself.

So, I decided to install a Bykski full cover waterblock on the card. I got everything dissembled and put back together with all new pads. I even used Gelid pads for the ram. So good so far. Then I put it on my machine and started to work it, everything was working well. Temps stayed cool. Then I upped the ram OC and pffft. Nothing. Brought the clocks back down and nothing. Tried to reboot the machine and nothing so long as that card was installed. Shimmied another machine over close to the tubes and got it to boot with the GPU installed as a secondary GPU. GPU-Z didn't even really recognize the card; told me it had the same ram is the primary, sometimes it said it was a 3080, sometimes it was unknown. It really depended on the boot. So I sat it for a few days to work on my other problems.

Last night, I got the standard heatsink and fan system back out and mounted it back on to make it a bit more portable to other systems. Nothing looked out of place on the card as I took the waterblock off. Put the card back into my system as the primary card, fired it up and worked great. GPU-Z showed me a Asus with GDDR6X ram, etc. Now I come to this morning and it won't boot as a primary card.

What the heck is going on?????

RMA it.

They might give you some trouble for changing the pads tho, but they might not. Won't know until you try it.

Looks like a solder joint being loose somewhere. But something you can safely do as a "just in case", very carefully inspect the PCIE gold fingers on the card for damage or grime (grime, dirt or corrosion may be able to be cleaned off or touched up) and if there is any, give it a nice clean with Deoxit D5 (best) or otherwise, 91% isopropyl alcohol-99%. Otherwise--RMA it like the others suggested. You are not going to be fixing that card. RMA it sooner rather than later, because intermittent complete failures like this are almost always a problem with BGA solder somewhere.

That is my fear....I wasn't the initial buyer either.

I'll double check the connections tonight. Maybe I accidently got some thermal compound on them or something. Boy wouldn't that be great?! I don't think they're dirty, but maybe. Otherwise, good to know I didn't do anything. But bad in that now I am at the mercy of Asus. I dissembled a second hand card that for all I know came out of a Dell or something and then put on a waterblock. I hope they don't tell me to pound sand.

Asus wasn't much help. They told me the warranty expired in February of 2021.

Well, it's not going to fix itself. You might as well ask your local ASUS subsidiary if you can send it in for an out-of-warranty repair quote.

Well, I sent in for the repair quote.....they only want $1100 to fix it.

Nice. I read someplace else where it said asus repair quotes usually come back for about MSRP of the actual card. That seems like a lot to fix the thing.

It's a shame you can't get warranty service despite it is less than a year old.

The retail box for my ASUS TUF-RTX3080-O10G-GAMING clearly advertises a 3 year limited warranty.

I had to pay $100 to ship the card and have it diagnosed. So, it is more like it will cost another $1100 to fix it.

I wish I could buy a new one...looks like they are going for $1800-2000 on ebay.

1100 to fix it is a piss take, they could absolutely fix it for far less than that.

There's a guy at hardforums, RazorWind, he repairs gpus and could more than likely tell you whats wrong with yours by your description. He wont try to rape you for $1100. Give him a shout, the worst he can do is say hes to busy.

surely you can just take off the heat sink and stick it in the oven. Give the card a re-bake to re-melt all the solder points. This should fix your card!

When you installed the waterblock you may of tightened the block too much bending and stressing the PCB.
Look up some threads where other people have fixed their card by sticking it in the oven. I'm deadly serious. I'm a pro and that would be my next step to fix that card.
