...Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me. The fact that some here are still clinging to their 3rd or 4th Xbox just shows this is almost the consumers' fault at this point.
Therein lies the problem: expensive software titles.
MS has lost BUCKET LOADS of money on replacing X360s. But they have milked every single owner through over-priced games multiple times over.
MS is smart smart smart. They have analysts that calculate "Customer Lifetime Value". Every time they make a new X360 sale, they go out and party. Because they know the CLV of each X360 owner is EUR 300+ (console plus 10+ games) minus the cost of a possible 50% replacement, EUR 100 (x50%)=EUR 50. Net EUR 250.
So what if your X360 fails. If MS replaces it... you will be so pleased you will rush out any buy another 3 games and the cost of replacement is fully covered. In fact, they have calculated THIS: a replacement X360 is "perceived" by the customer to be a new console, so they buy more games than they would have done if the old X360 had never blown.
WTF? WOW. It's all very clever behavioural marketing stuff.
