Just bought a vega 64 and it was only getting arounf 60fps in PUBG in certain senarios so I checked task manager + GPU-z:

I think this is the excuse I need to finally upgrade my 6 year old system (@ stock because mobo is fucked).

Gonna build 2600x ryzen system on payday :)

Hmmm, You really don’t need an excuse to upgrade. At 1440p though, the CPU should have a lot less impact on your frame rate than at 1080p, especially if it is running at 4.11GHz. I’m assuming it is, based on Windows, since your CPU-z says 3.7Ghz. I know you said stock speed, but Task Mgr shows 4.11.

If indeed you can’t overclock it, then a system upgrade surely can’t hurt it.

It's at stock because my mobo is buggered, it sometimes doesn't even turn on without multiple CMOS resets and prayers. I'm just gonna get 6 core 2600X in a couple weeks with MSI B450 board and some 3200MHz 16GB DDR4 RAM

Wouldn't the CPU utilisation need to be 100% before it would "bottleneck" your GPU? Is that what it is with the game running?
Oh, good catch! Even so, he sounds convinced he wants to upgrade anyway, and it certainly won’t make his situation worse.

Only if the game could use all 8 threads... which most don't (talking about PUBG here)

A battery might fix that along with a bios flash, but it sounds like you want an upgrade.

Also your board doing that could mean the board is finished.

So yeah sell what you can and upgrade to a 2600 at the least.

Not exactly the best choice considering how single thread bound games like PUBG are. DDR4 will help a lot though.

Yes that's CPU bound. The game is probably using 2-3 threads and the Windows Scheduler is bouncing it around the logical threads of the processor. 3770K is a bit old now and even first gen Ryzen is a good bit faster in games. Intel CPU prices are absurd at the moment but honestly a 2600X would potentially be a decent upgrade. But if you were going to upgrade it may be an idea to wait for Ryzen 3000, or at least until Intel CPU prices aren't stupid.

The bottom bench is more reliable as 1070ti and Vega 64 are about equal performance.

As you can see, Intel still wins the day, by a noticeable margin. At equal price it is clearly the better choice.

I'm sure at 1440p the gap will narrow

Bottleneck is bottleneck and the numbers speak for themselves. On top of all this, the 8600K can be given a healthy OC and the gap will widen further.

competitive shooters was always where ryzen fell behind.2600x with 3200 ddr4 should be fine though.
good find Vayra,I was looking for some 2600x numbers in pubg but I got distracted

Here we go with pubg again LOL (the brokenness with those graphs is just...wow).

Just tested this with vega 64 last weekend. With tiny OC to all core boost the 3770k was bottlenecking the GPU by up to 20% at 1440 (Wildlands really destroyed it when in towns). Time for big OC this weekend to see what happens. I told em to wait for upgrade till zen 2.

Ish yes(most Cpus now contain platform elements like pciex ,usb sata and memory controller so cpu limited can be a short sighted simplification) ,but he is likely being held back by the platform ,i was on a fx8350, despite it having enough grunt overclocked the memory controller and platform on the whole held me back i got a 2600 and am sort of underwhelmed at 4k , but I had high hopes ,in reality it Is actually miles better , much smoother and about 10-20% faster depending on application.

I'm running my Vega 64 @ 1440p with a 3770K @ 5.0GHz on all cores and 16GB DDR3 @ 2400 10-12-12-32 1T. Seems to run games good enough for me. But I'm not monitoring my FPS while gaming. So maybe it's not as good as it could be. I'm not doubting it could be better. I just ain't that damn picky.

That's where i Was with my Fx, i upgraded because I expected price's to rise and had the chance, as i said initially a bit underwhelmed but given the right memory my 2600x is that bit better enough, just i normally like 2x the oomphh.

I'd like to offer some input on this discussion. I am currently running an RTX 2080 in a Dell T3500 with a Xeon X5680(which is two generations older than your 3770k) and 48GB of RAM. Depending on the game, the 2080 is only just barely being bottlenecked by the CPU. Granted, I'm running dual 1440p displays. At 1080p the CPU would be bottlenecking the GPU more. Your Vega 64 shouldn't be bottlenecked much by your 3770k.

If it were me, I'd upgrade to dual Vega 64's in crossfire(if your mobo supports it) or upgrade to a 1080 or 2080, not the Ti's though as they're much too pricey.

Depends on a game. You'll find those that bottleneck as soon as one out of whatever many shoots close to 90% (Far Cry games are a good exapmle of that), you'll find those that generally produce the same fps at 95% as at 50% cpu (though you'll likely see stutter if the cpu gets hammered that much). Competitive shooters are more likely to fall into the first category, where single core and ram speed matters greatly.A CPU should be balanced, and 8600K is doing well at pretty much everything.

I advise the OP to use adaptive v-sync, I hope AMD has introduced some sort of dynamic v-sync option already since it was the nail in the coffin that made me ditch their cards back in 2015. That and CPU overhead in DX11 (which might be the cause of this whole problem in the first place)

How recent are those benchmark results? I get MUCH higher fps that that with a Ryzen system.. more like 130-140fps most the time at 1440P.

Last 5 mins of a game, skip to 1min in, i didn't intend to show this video, just uploaded to show a mate, but you can see the fps:

Settings:

pubgsettings.jpg

edit- and a 163fps cap in RTSS

R7 1800X @ 4.1ghz, RAM @ 3333mhz CL14, 1080Ti @ 2076/6200mhz (sry, not a vega, but this should still be valid to show platform potential of ryzen)
