3930k ->7800X worth it?

Thinking about possibly upgrading my 3930K system to a 7800X system. System is mostly used for crunching with some minor gaming every now and then. My only concern is is it actually worth it? How much of a performance gain will the upgrade yield? The 3930k has served me very well, and still does what I ask of it, but is there enough of a performance increase between the 3930k and 8700X to justify the cost of the upgrade? The upgrade would cost about $1000 including a much needed and overdue SSD.

If you are looking at the Price performance gain I would wait till the release of the i7-8700(k) to make that diction

Well it is pre-Haswell so this does mean there is a chunk of IPC you're missing. At the same time you have several Intel gens AND TR available so for a HEDT upgrade the time seems quite right, price points have shifted a bit due to competition as well. Is it worth it.. only if you max out your current rig doing what you do. Performance is only useful if its usable A lot will depend on clocks, I reckon we're talking about a 20% IPC gap altogether, give or take.

Crunching runs my CPU at it's maximum output. So yeah, I do use every bit of performance the CPU has to offer.

If this is all-core 3.8 Ghz like it shows here (although with my rig that cpu clock never is correct, somehow I can run my ivy at 5.4 Ghz according to Win 10 ) then there is a good bit of performance to be had, along with the IPC gap that'll amount to 35-50% if you put a decent OC on there.

it's all cores running at 3.8 GHz. Can do more, but then my room starts to get too hot to sleep in.

Plenty of benchmarks out there to give you an idea of performamce. Then once you know how it performs, you can decide if its 'worth it'.

I know, with respect, you said 7800x... why not wait for 8700k? Its a hex... and likely coming in cheaper than 7800x as well as lerdorm better in games.

I say go for it mate.

The board alone will give you a few upgrades with M.2 etc.

I would stretch for the 7820X for a more real feel of an upgrade up front but as you say, you can buy a used one down the track. So no qualms there.

Not worth it.
If you think that $600 is out of budget, and you're sleeping in the same room as the PC, it clearly is not justified to spend extra money on it.
We're talking CPU + Memory (which is expensive right now) + Motherboard (also expensive) + SSD (might not be on the radar, but you will get an itch soon).

That's too much ($800-$1000) for at best 20% extra performance

When considering the 7800x in isolation, I would have given a big fat yes.

If you can say based on your use case that X299>Z370 due to the PCIe/memory/etc...
It's the most cores/price you can get on intel's stack, on par with the expected pricing of the 8700k.

But, considering that you are only moving up from the 3930k, I would have to change that to a no. You'd be looking at a ~$600 investment for nothing more than a not very impressive performance jump and the extra expansion options (m.2+newer chipset). Maybe if you were eyeing the 8-core I would say yes in all cases, but 3930k=>7800x just looks like a mega expensive sidegrade.

Why had nobody brought up ryzen? His CPU will be using heavily multithreaded applications, so a ryzen 1700 with 4 more threads than the 7800x wou ld be quite benefiitial plus its tdp is 65w vs 140w on the 7800x and not to mention it's cheaper and the motherboards for it are cheaper too. I mean with the extra threads that would be a significant upgrade imo. He sleeps in the same room as the pc so the lower the cpu tdp the better.

I´m happy with my Xeon 2680v2 running 10 cores at 3,5Ghz. You could do the same if your motherboard supports Xeons. They cost about 200$ at Ebay.

Get a used E5-2697 v2 xeon from Ebay? That'll give you more bang for your buck, will slaughter the newer i7 in crunching.

I had 14c/28t xeon in my daily driver last year, and 2 pairs of 16c/32t and 18c/36t in crunchers.

My 3930k clocks past 5GHz, no reason to upgrade. I have a 6700k, i always go back to the 3930k. Use the 6700k for board testing

My 3930k isn't that good of a OC'er. Best I've gotten out of this particular chip is 4.5GHz. And since it runs at 100% load crunching whenever the system is powered up, anything past 3.8 GHz generates enough heat to actually start increasing the room temperature. I may go Ryzen just because of this.

IIRC then 3930k @ 4.5...5Ghz is right up there with OCd AMD FX8xxx and FX9xxx on the power consumption front (~300W+ on CPU)

My R7 1700 @stock clocks and undervolted by 100mv is ~60W regular and 80W 100% AVX load. I dont see much value in pushing for silicon limit by dumping vcore into a chip, 3.5-3.6Ghz all core can be achieved by marginal overvolt or (Si-lottery permitting) at stock.

The 8 core Ryzens also should be great, but again you are just looking at a pretty expensive sidegrade. $450 before RAM at least!!!

Ryzen is a god send for crunchers. Many threads, fast and efficient.

Ryzen is objectively better than intel current line offer ups for HEDT.
Lower power consumption, very similar ipc, way lower price (especially with mobos taken into consideration), plus did I mention it's cheaper? Problem with it on a gaming factor is that people often compare it to an i7 7700k with both using a 1080 ti. The fact of the matter is that they ought to compare the ryzen 1600 with a 1080 ti vs a 7700k with a 1080 because it's about the same price at that point.
Tl;dr: quit hating on AMD for making a good product.
