I put refurbished in quotes for a reason. I bought 6 of these drives, not a single one was marked refurbished, none had that ugly green sticker that Seagate puts n their refurbished dives either. I'm pretty sure these are new-old stock drives that newegg is just trying to get rid of.

Now, the good and bad of these dives. They are enterprise drives, they are designed for RAID arrays(but work as a single drive just fine). They also have pretty good performance, they are tuned for performance, not silence. That means these drives are loud. That is the bad. You can definitely hear them when they spin up, and you can hear the heads moving when you access the drive.

These are likely just EOL drives from Seagate, old review samples etc. I think there are far better 3TB drives out there.

What about heat? Thinking of an upgrade for my Qnap TS-253p

Depends on what you consider "better". In terms of reliability, there isn't much out there that will beat a Constellation. There also isn't much out there that will outperform them either. There are definitely quieter drives out there though.

I haven't had any heat issues. I put them in my 12-bay 2U enclosure and they seem to run cool, but that has fans right behind the drives pulling air through the unit. I had 2 in a USB docking station, and they got warm, but not hot to the touch. I've had drives get burning hot in that docking station due to absolutely no airflow.

If they were bigger I would get 14, but I already have 2tb drives and it isn't enough to make me swap. Steal of a deal though. I have had one refurbished 2tb constellation fail in my raid array in the like 2 years it has been running.

Wonder how my 2TB Ultrastar 7K6000 performs relative to this.

for some reason, the link seems to go thru "http://cj.dotomi.com/" or anrdoezrs.net?

Not here, it goes straight to the NewEgg page.

Also, just a note, these are now at $58 each. Still not a bad deal for 3TB of storage or drive.

TPU getting referal points. A more friendly form of advertising.

Yep. All newegg links automatically get sent through those. I think Amazon links do it too.

I've whitelisted TPU, but I'm running ghostery, which stops pages like that, which are otherwise transparent :)

Would have grabbed those instead but a little too late. Installed mine replacing 2 "aging" 1.5TB WD Green and I saw a huge difference transfer speed-wise.

It's interesting these are all encrypted HDDs, by the part numbers. Meaning the platter contents is encrypted for easy wiping. Are these "open box" per chance? Like quickly repurposed via the instant wipe function?

I wish I would have looked at the power on hours before putting into service...

Kind of odd, the newer reviews on NewEgg are very mixed while the older reviews are mostly positive. Makes a person wonder why.
