WRT proprietary fan connectors, I've even had a HP server fan that used an inverse PWM control signal -- so it ran at full speed when it was supposed to be off or at minimal speed and turned off at maximum fan speed when controlled by the motherboard BIOS.
I've also come across fans that aren't mentioned anywhere in the manufacturer's product pages (Delta and Nidec) because they were custom designed for HP and/or Dell.

Yeah, I'm sure custom stuff is floating around out there but that shouldn't be in a desktop PC. The connector in question here isn't proprietary, I have two right now a shelf right next to me.
