I'm thinking of getting a 43" 4k TV for gaming, the thing is I have GTX 1070 so provable I'm gonna play most games at 1080p.
How the picture compares 4K-TV@1080p vs 1080p-TV@1080p ?

I would assume at 1080p for 43" the image would look pretty stretched.

Stretched ? not much really. I'm browsing / working / gaming on a Samsung 40" TV @ 1080p for several years now, and the aspect looks...pretty normal to me ?

I just set my 4K TV to 1080p and things are different looking at the desktop as far as reading things here on TPU. Almost blurry, but maybe my eyes just need to adjust to the huge letters...lol

On the flip side, if you don't have to play with the highest settings, I feel like a 1070 could run 4K gaming to a point.

If you're displaying 1080p on a 4k display 1 pixel will be displayed across 4 squares due to 4k being four times the pixel count of 1080p, presuming that's the case it'll mean the image becomes stretched.

I would honestly just stick with your 1080p TV since there's nothing wrong with it and running games at 1080p on a 4k panel is a waste of money really.

Agreed, if he does go to a 4k tv, it's worthwhile doing 4k medium / high over gaming at 1080p.

I used my 4k tv with my 1080Ti and it depends on the games you play. Some games I had to drop a good amount of settings to get decent frames.

Agreed. I do not play a lot of the latest and greatest games. I guess I should have added "game dependent" to my earlier reply.

With a 2160p display, you can still do 1080p gaming. Just set your in-game res to 1080p and you're good. The TV with scale the image to fill the screen.

Not stretched, scaled. 2160p and 1080p are the exact same aspect ratio. 1080p scales into 2160p perfectly.

Gotta disagree here. Done both. Frame-rate is life, and frame-rates for a GTX1070 at 2160p are less than ideal. 1080p is still the butter-zone for a GTX1070.

I say 1440p is about the butter.

To be blunt, they aren't great with a 1080ti either ;) Although I do max out all of the settings.

Sorry but on my 4k 28" panel it appears stretched in comparison to my true 1080p panel, that's just my experience.

That can depend on the game. Generally though, GTX1070's perform very well at 1080p in every game I've seen.

That has to be a perception thing. 1080p divides perfectly into 2160p by 2 across both the Y and X axis, therefore a 1080p image will look no different scaled up on a 2160p screen than a 1080p screen of the same size.

Get the 4K TV and never look back. Son is using a 2060 on a 43" and I'm depressed when I look at my 1080p 24" monitor. The 1070 will struggle a bit on native res. with triple A titles but you can drop to 1440 for a bit blurrier image but still nice or you can ditch the AA on 4K, no noticeable jaggies at that res. It also depends on what FPS you want in your games.

Unfortunately a lot of TVs still do the upscaling, regardless, it looks better than on a native 1080p TV of same size simply because you can't see the pixel structure. I can genuinely spot the pixels even as far back as 2-3m for a 1080p TV larger than ~43 inch.

No, your eyes are not deceiving you. The scaler is antialiasing the picture, which makes it look blurry. This is ridiculous when 2k divides evenly into 4k. If it didn't do that, then you'd have a perfectly clear 2k picture on it. Of course, one can't switch off the antialiasing, either and is one of my pet hates.

I have two budget Samsung TVs, one 1080p (k6250) and one 4k (mu7000). The above is true, 4k tv is much clearer at 1080p.

Re my post just above yours, if your TV antialiases with the scaling, then the picture is actually blurrier than on a 1080p TV. Easy test for you: connect it to your PC and set it to 1080p and see if text, window edges look a bit blurred, or perfectly sharp. In all likelihood they will look blurred. Now, set the PC to 4K and look at how that blurriness goes away.

If you've got W10 (you don't say in your specs) and you're feeling daring, set your PC to 4k and the scale factor to 2. You'll then get a 1080p sized picture with amazing clarity. The edges will be perfectly sharp since no scaler antialiasing and everything will be rendered at 4k resolution.

Thanks will try it, i remember having to move the mouse a lot which is why I even run windows at 1080P. Not sure if the scaling helps with that?

It does fix that, yes. You can set the mouse pointer speed in the control panel anyway, so no need to resort to this just to fix that. :)

I have a brand new 4K LG TV. I have streamed 1080 to it and besides it looking grainy it has a weird white back light on the whites. My monitor is way better

Thanks everybody for your input. I guess there is no clear cut answer. Choosing between blurry picture where you can't see the pixels 4k vs sharper picture where you can see them if sitting close enough FullHD. More or less 720p vs 1080p back in the day when running 720p content.

And as back then, figure out what looks best to you and go with it. Getting input from others like you've done here is never a bad thing, but ultimately it will be up to your personal perspective.

The only reason I have kept my old Panasonic 32" TV for gaming @1080p, is it's the last of the small TV with built-in HD Satellite Decoder. It seem Satellite HD Decoder is now reserved for larger screens, ie 50"+. The days of smaller TVs having Satellite HD Decoder built-in are gone. ..RIP
