460 Superclocked faster than 6850?

My brother is telling me that this card is faster than the 6850... I have read some reviews and one shows the NVIDIA card faster, but others show the ATI card is faster. I'm looking to purchase this card for someone, anyone have some input for me?

It is faster than the stock 6850. Overclock the 6850 and it's faster than the 460. If you want something that doesn't need to be overclocked, I'd go with the 460 or wait until pre-overclocked versions of the 6850 are out.

At stock mhz they are about the same 6850 vs gtx 460 1gb .
Buy yourself a stock clocked 6850 or gtx 460 1gb they are beasts at overclocking its not worth to pay for factory oc on stock coolers.

I was just recently reading an article at techreport about the 6800's, and given the new pricing they threw in stock, and overclocked GTX460's into the testing, including the EVGA FTW model which comes clocked at 850mhz, here are some graphs of how it fares against the 6800's, I've underlined the EVGA 460.

not freakin bad IMO, most 6850's that overclock well get to, or just a smidge over 6870 performance, which this 460 handily achieves at 1080p. Nvidia have a good chip up their sleeve to fully enable (sp's), clock up, and counter the 6800's with.

1.) Don't get a GTX460 with 768MB of RAM, get one with 1GB of RAM. Yes, performance is about the same as long as the card doesn't run out of memory, but newer games are needing more than 768MB of RAM.

2.) Don't bother with the superclocked card. The standard card will overclock way beyond Superclock speeds, and both will max at abut the same clock speeds. And for the price you are paying for the superclocked card you can get a 1GB standard card.

Both of my standard GTX460s do 875MHz, they'd go higher if I unlocked the voltage.

Also 8 ROPS, which accounts for pixel fillrate and more importantly AA grunt, all in all the 1gb card is simply a better buy, especially considering the overclocking scaling, its just marvellous.

W1zzard's chart shows the 460 1gb behind the 6850, and we all trust w1zzard here. That's stock version though, the Super Overclock version is probably faster. However, once non stock 6850 hits the market, I think the lead is going back to 6850. Erocker's advice pretty much covers everything there is to say.

Since ROPS and memory bus are so closely linked, when they disabled 64 bits of the memory bus they also disabled 8 ROPS, 1/4 of both. not to mention 1/4 of the physical memory which goes without saying.

I do find it odd that they perform so similarly given the 768mb card is 1/4 down on everything except shaders and clockspeeds....

I really think the 768 version deserved another name, like 455 GTX or something. I mean they have different specs... I wonder if they did it thinking maybe someone would see a review for a 460 (1gb) and go buy a 460 (768) after getting all excited about the low price, not knowing the difference. I know from personal experience the average consumer is indeed dumb enough to do that.

Why not a 6870? They are just a tiny bit more $$$ than the 460 1GB.

In my opinion, it doesn't really matter. The 6850/6870 and the GTX460 1GB are all beasts, and they run neck and neck with each other, it just depends on the games that are going to be played. Some games run better on NV hardware, and some run better on AMD hardware.
