I will have enough money to get either in about 3 weeks-

E8500
Q6600
4850

Which one shall i get? i really fancy a E8500 now i have a nice p45 board to put it into.I would like a 4850 but my 3850 still runs all my games fine at my rez(1440x900).As for the Q6600 i have always kinda fancied one,but i know i would get a much better oc from the E8500 and i dont really think i use anything to benefit from 4 cores.

Get the 4850, I was gonna get a new CPU but with nehalem (or however its spelt, lol) round the corner I decided upgrading from my e6600 was a waste of money. Unless you want epen*s or benchmarking scores, the difference on a new CPU over yours at that clock os not worth the upgrade, looking at a couple of FPS, tops.

You'll get much bigger improvements by upgrading your GFX card.

The 4850 is on par with a 3870X2 dont forget!

Why don't you save up for a larger monitor? Saying that, you have a 256MB 3850. Hmmm, I'd say new monitor. ;)

Getting a 4850 sounds more appealing, however 1440 x 900 wouldn't really do it justice (in my eyes).

Tigger, are you thinking of doing a Nehalem build at release? If not, I say throw the e8400 in the mix depending on how much the e8500 is. If it is only a few quid more I say get the e8500 and enjoy.

4850, you will see a fair difference even at your res, especially in the more demanding games. I see no point personally in upgrading the CPU at this time, I would rather be surer of the lay of the land with Nahlem plus I read where Intel will have some price drops in August prior to the Q9650 etc being released.

Thanks guys,i am still stuck between the e8500 or the 4850.I want a better ocing chip for my new board. This 6750 is a fine chip but needs too much volts for nice(read 4ghz) overclocks.

I might just flip a coin when i have the dosh and let fate decide.

I wont be going for a nehalem build straight away, theres no way i will have enuff dosh.I guess it will take me mebbe a year afte it comes out to scrape enuff coin up,depending on the prices and if they are ddr3 only.

The 4850 will give you a much better increase for in game performance, going from 3.6Ghz to 4 ghz wont do a lot if anything for in game peformance.

A 4850 and a 3.6ghz e6750 would be a great combo for games.

My baby E8200 will do almost 4.5gig but will do 4gig on under 1.35V and thats on air with low temps, I have promised the sale to another UK member next month because I was going to upgrade to a Q9550, I dont think I will upgrade now for the reasons I gave in my last post TBH....but if I change my mind and for some reason he does not want it, you could have 2nd dibs, its a guarenteed overclock, many E8400's dont go this high and some E8500's struggle, I think I told him he could have it for £85........although I havent told him yet I might change my mind

buy the 4850 my 280gtx at 1400x900 made a giant difference with all the eye candy turned on. If you think 1400x900 isn't a high setting for a video card run 3dmark06 at AA 8x sampling 2 quality and and texture filtering set to anisotrophic and level 16 and watch your frame rates drop.

Why? You might get more out lapping the AC7. Also, good choice on the HD4850, came down to how much you are going to game and video cards become more outdated IMO than motherboard socket/chipset, but getting really close to the same with the way Intel does things lately.

EDIT: Sorry was still half asleep while typing the previous post and misread. Thought you asked about an HD4650. LOL
