4870- NOT satisfied

Hi also bought the 4870 today. Sold my 8800 GTS 512, so didnt have to pay so much for the upgrade. Anyways testing Test drive i think i saw a steady 30 fps upgrade, so that made me happy. However when i tested 3dmark06 i was kinda surprised. Got basically the same score as my clocked 8800 GTS 512 card. The scores:

clocked 8800 gts 512:

sm2.0: 6412
sm3.0: 6078

unclocked 4870:

sm2.0: 5644
sm3.0: 6925

then someone posted their 3dmark06 score too with following score:

sm2.0: 6271
sm3.0: 7992

conclunsion, my drivers or something must be fucked up cause i got much lower GPU score then his. I think i gonna do a windows reinstall. I use these drivers btw:

Since i saw the good FPS upgrade i calm and also its alot more quiet then the 8800 gts card. The card is pretty hot though and i hope riva tuner will support it so i can use the fan controll. Set the fan to a static number doesnt feel so good, even if its safe

Tell us your system specs as well, cpu and have an effect on your gpu scores . Also keep in mind that games are what really matter not whatever 3dmark score you can get.

Uninstall 3dmark06, do a hard-drive defrag, reboot and do a registry cleaning (Registry Mechanic or TuneUP for example) then reinstall 3dmark06 then install Feb 2008 hotfix. Next install March 2008 DX9 update, reboot. Then try 3dmark06 again.

Don't use Cat 8.7 beta, wait for the official release.

So did format and reinstalled windows. Installed the new offical 8.7 catalyst and the DX9 update.. still the same sm2.0 and sm3.0 score.. kinda annoying. Dont know whats up really now. Maybe try the older hotfixed drivers.

There are currently no official HD 4800 drivers out right now. Just wait for the official drivers and see how your scores turn out. My HD 4870 runs awesome with the beta on my 46" HDTV at full 1080p with any game I throw at it with Maximum detail.

Anyway I don't trust benchmarks anyway just the feel of a game.

Ye but my 3dmark06 score is way off if compared too Eastcoasthandle's. Dont think its only 300 cpu mhz that is doing that. Thats what im trying to solve ^^

Now I see what you mean by the official 8.7 cat drivers for Vista x64. I too will do a complete format and a fresh Vista x64 install just to make sure all is running well. I will post if I have any problems.

Well give it some time, i mean even the other sides products dont work as advertised the first time, besides the drivers of the original poster were probably crap anyway, dont ever trust beta drivers, always go with final release, i mean recently 8.7 final were released and i expect Hotfix for AGP parts to be released a few days from now.

Im at a point right now with my dual 4850's that cpu matters. my 3.6ghz q6600 tops me at like 19,000 doing a higher vcore run just for benchmarks I upped the cpu to 3.7ghz and got 19,400.

So when your at a bottleneck just 100mhz can = 400 points.

It is NOT a fair or correct comparison to compare you scores from one machine to that of another, any valid test needs to be on the same system with the same specs.

There is more than enough confirmed information and benchmarks out there to show that a 4850 = 8800gt/gts and that the 4870 is about 20%-30% faster than that. So if yours is not making the cut you have some other reason for it.

Well im a little concerned.Just pulled the trigger on the 4850.Was going to keep it and give my brother my old gts 640mb .I just want to reinstall drivers.Ive never ran regcleaner.I have made system registry edits for boot intenet etc.I really hate calling microsoft umpteen times for reinstall.Ive changed video cards many times cross manufacturers.I usually just uninstall old reinstall new.Should i go for ms update wdm first?I want this thing to outpace my old $300 gts.If theres a driver issue IE besides uninstall reinstall could someone like wizzard or smarter please put a stiky up before i get dissapointed.I wanna post my 3do6 at 1302 here along with all my new scores.

Never knew u couldnt just uninstall and reinstall card from diff manufacturers without messing with registry?I think ms should look into this as it shouldnt be a card issue my2cents

summersend, I recommend trying out the card on another machine to rule out hardware defects. The other posters are right, this card should outperform your GTS. If the card runs great on another machine then reinstall Windows XP on yours. (If it doesn't run great on another machine RMA that bad boy) Whatever you do DON'T give up. It's a great card.

O.K. my HD 4870 runs awesome. No problems at all, its all speed and performance with completely MAXED PQ.

Also reading up on several reviews for HD 4850 & HD 4870 they are the top dogs in gaming. So I suspect something is wrong with your current system setup or something?

The problem is nvidia's and ati's uninstalation programs. Following this:http://forums.techpowerup.com/showthread.php?t=52502 seems to work for many people. 1302 for 3d06 is a horrible score.. I think you left out a number.

8800 gts 512 @ 810/1998/1023

4870 @790/1050

ignoring the fact that the cpu score is 200 lower for some reason, but it used to change so doesnt really matter, but the sm2.0 score is so much lower. Kinda thought that 4870 would be more ahead than this. I prolly can overclock alot more than this, but 1100 on memory gave me error on furmark(screen turned black and i had to reboot). And in CCC 790 is max on engine.

Btw still 300 points lower then EastCoasthandle's sm3.0 score but with 200 more cpu clock and hes card is unclocked.

Took delivery of my 4850 yesterday.Did the fan setting trick for 90% and went straight for 700 1100.Stays below 55c One bad thing is if use AMDgputool to clock higher my fan goes back to default and that was set at 2% in that file LOL.It beat the gts by about 900 in 3d06 and toasts it in crysis.Any tips on the fan+AMDgputool working together,or is BIOS time?

@ mmaker I wouldnt worry about it I only get 11k lol now thats a bottleneck! However test it at 1920 by 1200 with 4 * AA on and my score is only 1k below that of someone with an e8400 @ 4ghz...

use AMD GPU clock tool to get past the 790 lock, then use a separate fan controller or consult the fan fix thread, as i am certain someone has one overclocked with the fan up.

Update- since driver 8.7 was released my 3Dmark (overclocked) is now 16078 which is better than i got with my overclocked 8800GT (15,253) . Maybe this was just a driver problem afterall, these guys outta make decent drivers that are extensively tested before rushing to release a product. Well by and large i am happier now and dont feel so ripped off.
