Hi

Please dont respond to this thread unless you actually own a 4870 and know what your talking about, random advice wont help me, and normal is your psu powerfull enough answers are not going help me either.

I have just purchased 2 x 4870s and running them in xrossfire, I am having a tough time keeping the system stable while playing Age of Conan, the system was fine with my 3870s.

I do notice that there are 4 leds on the back of my cards , when I boot up only 3 of them light up, the first one lights up and the second one remains off and 3 and 4 light up as well, I have a Cooler Master realpower pro 1000 watt psu, I have the 4 6 pin connecters attached to my Cards, are the lights all suppsed to light up , and if so is there a rpoble,m with both of ,my cards?

I believe my PSU to have ample power, and I am not using any molex connecters to supply the power, I am using the dedicated 6 pin cables.

My cards are Sapphire ,y system specs are in the related area, advice appreciated.

Your PSU will definately be able to handle your system. That's not the issues.

To be honest, I've not seen any LEDs on my 4870. However, have you tried reading your manual? Specficially the Troubleshooting section? That might enlighten you as to how it uses the LEDs.

After a quick google check I've found that 3 power LEDs means the cards aren't getting enough power. A perfectly working card will have no LEDs on at all (obviously why I never noticed). I'm confused as to why a PSU as large as yours it struggling with 2 of these cards, they only draw about 160W roughly.

Or the cards faulty :(

I was actually brought a card like that from one of my neigbors but LED numbers 1 2 and 4 from looking left(power) were lit and then I noticed one of the capacitors were loose,

the two outer leds are for the pcie power connectors
the middle ones are card too hot and voltage regulator says something is bad.
i dont know for certain which one is which, but probably the one staying off all the time is the critical temp fault.

Thanks for the Advice guys, maybe my instabillity is just a driver issue, and your take on the leds W1zzard sounds fine to me , I think maybe my cards are normal , because it would be pretty rare for ,me to have 2 faulty cards.

I have contacted Sapphire support for there take on the leds to be safe.

My instabillity during Conan didnt worry me to much ,but then I came across some posts about only having 3 leds was a bad thing got me worried.

Are you using the reference cooler? Or an aftermarket cooler?

You might want to try taking the cooler off, and checking that the voltage regulators have proper thermal stuff on them.

When I first got my card I had the same problem with my quick mash up to test the card. Funnilly enough I have the very same power supply. I'd check the power connector on the PSU are plugged in properly and that they are on seperate rails i.e. green on the top and blue on the bottom or vice versa. Good luck.
