i have brand new sapphire 4870x2 coming up. i still have my old gigabyte gtx260 192sp(not the newer216sp) . i found out here that gtx260 sli really beats 4870x2 in most game tests. power usage seems same in both cases. so have 4870x2 bad microstuttering etc below40fps or is the gtx260sli still better choice

gtx 260 SLI is better, OC'd its about the same as the gtx 295, which is on average faster than 4870x2.

yeah the downside to nvidia is that you have to get an SLI motherboard... theyre usually not very good with OCing quads. I have the 750i, and its not a terribly strong OC'er.

For games SLI is a good setup to have though, the power of dual cards is at the mercy of drivers and nvidia> ATI in terms of driver updates IMO. Hopefully ATI can change in the future.
