4890 VRM temp problems

Hi guys,

I'm having VRM temp problems on my Asus Top 4890. While gaming I'm hitting the high 90's which seems allot to me.

Cooling wise I have a Accelero Twin turbo which does a greate job on the GPU/Mem. But not on the VRM chips.

I've left the red large plate on from the stock cooler. Which covers the mem chips and VRM.

So I was wondering if I would get better cooler from using the VRM heat sinks instead of the stock cooler red plate.

Has anyone used this cooler and the VRM heat sinks that could tell me if it works well enough. Or any other ideas would appreciated.

unscrew the vrm screws add some washers to the screws and screw them back in it adds more pressure and more heatsink contact therefore dissipates faster. it worked on my old 4870

You could try some thing like this if one would fit that is with the cooler you have.

You could try to get more air intake too on the front or even the bottom of the case.

90c is fine...get over 105c, and then worry. I rma'ed cards with 110c++

AsRock, if all else fails I will get one of these I think.

cadaveca, ah so there may not be a problem? would like to lower the temps abit tho.

Given your description, you have reference cards, so no, not a problem at all. I get up to 100c regularily, pushing 2560x1600, and 8xAA.

Temps can affect your overclock, for sure, however, but proivding nice clean power has an affect as well.

Unless you are noticing performance issues(high temps might lead to throttle), I'd not worry about it too much.

The issue for me is that if you remove the cooler, you'll always have high temps if those white pads have been compressed in any way. They are single-use only.

The thermalright coolers, in this instance, would be your best bet, however, you'll not be able to use stock cooling with them.

I use the Zalman RHS90 vrm heatsink which again will not work with reference cooling and some after-market coolers.

Yeh I would buy some Zalman ZM-RHS1 for the mem sinks or are there better ones?

I like the Enzotech ramsinks better. Their thermal tape just sticks alot better than most of the manufacturers out there.

Do the chips highlighted in green need heat sinks? and what are they?

They do not "need" heatsinks. If you look at the stock heatsink there is an indention for those pulse chips.

Thanks for all your help guys, will let you know what happends.

Going to buy some washers in a few. If that does not help much I've gona buy a VRM-R2 and some of those copper heat sinks for the mem chips.

So that will add one more fan to my PC, think it will take off soon !!
