4K Samsung U28D590 with r9 290x problems.

I just bought this brand new monitor and maybe the second time I used it the screen started to turn off and on, and the image distorted. This happens intermittently without any specific trigger as far as I can tell. It does not happen any more or less frequently when the GPU is under load. Setting the resolution to 1080p and back to 4K usually fixes it. Unplugging the displayport cable and plugging it back it also fixes it. However even when it is "fixed" I still see something like tearing in the middle of the screen intermittently. I've never seen it happen at lower resolutions, but I haven't left it in a lower resolution for long.

What I've tried:
- Re-installed the drivers using CCleaner.
- Ran a stress test with OCCT at both 1080p and 4K, no problems
- Bought a new cable, does not even work at 4K! Display turns on and off without ever showing the desktop. (Do all displayport cables support 4K @ 60Hz?)
- checked many times whether the cable is correctly plugged in (although at the GPU end it feels a little loose, the tiny screw almost seems to be in the way. But how can that be possible?)
- Gaming is always smooth and beautiful at 4K, no BSoD or artifacts

Any ideas on how I can fix this? What could be the cause: GPU, monitor or cable? Anyone have a similar issue?

P.S.: Temperatures are always within the normal range.

Just for the record you did make sure the monitor is set to Display port 1.2mode right. Don't think that is the issue but it's one if the first places to start.

In the monitors setting (on the monitor itself) you can normally set the mode of the display port. The asus one that I'm looking at starts in dp 1.1 mode so I was curious if the Samsung is like that to. I do not think that would cause the issue but it's a start and helps eliminate things.

Oh I see. I checked the manual and unfortunately there does not seem to be a setting like that for this monitor.

Ok cool, it was just one thing to rule out.

You know after reading what you have tried I am curious about what cables your using (Brand/model I mean). Could be a cable issue...

The image getting distorted and unplugging it/changing the resolution means your resetting the video output and that fixes it which gets me wondering.

Do you have two HDMI cables? Even though I know this will not work for 60FPS 4k, try hooking in two HDMI cables to your card and running at 4k30FPS and do a stress test/try messing around to see if that distortion issue happens again.

The first cable came with the monitor. The second cable is a generic one which the guy in the store claimed was displayport 1.2. There's no writing on the packaging or on the cable.

Apparently one HDMI cable will give 4K at 30hz, and two will give 4K at 60hz (picture by picture mode + eye-infinity). I tried using one HDMI cable this morning, stress test was fine and I didn't see any distortion/flickering after about an hour of use. Now I am trying the picture by picture mode with DP/HDMI, but they are not synchronizing properly (slight delay on the HDMI half). I tried to get it to work with HDMI/DVI-to-HDMI (since r9 290x only has one HDMI port), but the DVI input half cannot be set to 1920x2160 .

So do you (or anyone) know how fix the synchronization or the DVI resolution problem?

Well first of all, two HDMI cannot support 4k at 60FPS, its just not in the cards unless ive missed something. Your only running at 30FPS when using dual HDMI.

I have never tried the method with adapters, I would try both on adapters and see what happens.

But if the stress tests are fine, it could be a cable issue or a port issue.

I bought a new higher quality cable and the distortion/flickering has stopped. However I still get the lines that look like tearing once in awhile, but I can live with that.
