4TB hdd for Storage?

i am looking around for a 4TB harddrive for storage to all my Anime, and i always had Western Digital at the moment my 2TB is getting too small and don't have more sata connectors on my ITX board so thinking about swapping out my 2TB Green drive with a 4TB in this month or next month.

i have been looking at these 2 4tb WD drives.

i am thinking is it worth it to buy the extra money to get the SE drive i know it's for more professional use then the RED drive, but i want my data to be save for the next couple of years or more and be stored local don't tell me to get a external USB3.0 bcs i don't have many usb ports left and a e-sata drive costs too much at 4tb.

Buy two Hitachi 2-3 TB drives and mirror them. That's safety.

i don't like the Hitachi "DeathStar" discs as they are called, few i had has tried before turning 1 or 2 years even the one in this laptop i am using right now had a Deathstar disc which died a week after garantie ran out on the desk.

Hitachi Deathstars are currently extremely reliable in extreme corporate data systems. Deathstar is an old moniker from a very old time when they had a bad batch. It would be shortsighted to discount them based on a bad experience years ago.

that's might be true, but i have also had bad experience with Seagate only drives i ever have been in good terms with are WD drives and i like their RMA they never let me down.

I have to admit, WD's RMA process has been very pleasant for me. In either case, I still recommend 2 x 2-3TB drives mirrored.

Your data is not safe unless you have a backup of it, regardless of how good the drive quality is.

So you have 2TB of anime? As a secondary (and cheaper alternative) do you actually watch it all? I used to watch a lot, so I would download it, watch it, and move on to the next thing. Very rarely did I ever go back to watch something when I did used to watch anime. On an unrelated note, I grew out of it, watching it, going to conventions, cosplay, etc. Something eventually clicked in my mind.

i re-watch most of it from time to time, and i wanna keep storing it. I also buy some of them on blu-ray when i can and got money for it.

and yes i know a drive can fail, but my Greens have done me good for some years they are just getting too small and i can't add more drives to my ITX system so it's either go bigger or cloud and i want it local to get access to it so cloud is not an option, and i don't wanna run a nas for that since i won't use it for anything else then storage so i don't see a purpose for it, sry to say it.

yes i am on budget to find a good 4tb hdd.

With that said, my pc is connected to my 32inch tv in my bed room anyway so why go nas and spend money on that, while my pc is still on 24-7?

Less power consumption, the option to dump 2 WD Red's in that would arguably perform better in that sort of situation. But as you said your budget is for a reasonably priced 4TB, so it's a non issue anyway.

i don't raid my drives for my personal use, i normally starts to feel when they gets old or have "hiccups" so it's time to replace them even life on my 2TB's are still good, but thing now is space any big enough ^^;

I always put data integrity above all else. There is a reason why both my gateway/NAS and my tower both have RAID-5 arrays for storage. When you use storage for something a little more important like documents and family pictures, losing your data isn't a viable option so a single drive shouldn't even be considered IMHO and an external and/or segregated backup is a must.

For just anime, fine, go ahead and grab yourself a 4TB drive, but you don't need a red or a SE/RE(3/4). You just need a storage drive, so another green would be fine unless you're planning on going the NAS or RAID route.

i don't use Raid bcs it's too much money buying to discs and only can use one of them for data and the other for backup, plus i never had a faulty hdd with important data on bcs i always when it starting having problems replaced it before it totally died.

could be a good one but not much of a Seagate fan, funny enough the 10 drives i have pulled out from customers pc's the past 6months 9 of them have been Seagate only one WD

but i am still going with a WD driver i just dunno which of the above once it should be.

Sometimes drives don't give you a chance to recover your data before they fail. Just because it hasn't happened to you yet doesn't mean it won't. I'm just saying that it's playing with fire, even more so when you expect to save terabytes worth of data from a failing drive if that were to be the case.

I'm not saying you need to do it, I just don't want to see a thread later about recovering your data because your drive failed or is on the verge of failing, that is all. A backup plan should always be a consideration imho.

I'm not a big Seagate fan as well, but it was on sale and I decided to take a chance. So far so good!

lol same thing with porn...(BTW, i don't think that i have watch a whole porn, not because of that reason, but because i fast forward/use slider to view it) who needs 2.5TB of porn?... lol ...

should always have a off-site back-up... (meaning give a trusted person a copy of your collection)... i lost 1TB of video, because a HDD failed. (was able to get the content back from the "offsite storage")

there is like 22USD/16euros in difference from a Green to a Red and from a Green to a SE there is 107USD/78euros so basic is, is it worth the money stepping up to a SE instead of a Green or Red?

not really... the SE are faster, and enterprise ready, meaning the basically bulletproof for 24/7 access.
a difference between the Green and the Red drives is that the green are rated to 60c and the red to 70c.
i would prefer red to green. (

I have 2 Seagate drives and 1 of them is only 320GB and has been going strong for over 7 years! The only WD I ever bought had bad sectors.

One bad experience shouldn't discourage you from trying WD again. Every issue I've had with WD drives have failed within the first few days and WD was very fast to RMA them, all the other are still going strong. Additionally, you only have to wait two days if you do an advance RMA if you live in a region where they'll do that. Just a heads up.

As someone who owns 5 of these Toshiba rebadged Hitachi 'Deathstars' has 2 running as dump and gaming drives in his PC with 2 in a NAS and 1 sitting in a external HDD dock - They are all running smoothly. I too was scared at picking them up at first given that they're priced lower if not similar to the cheapest seagate drives out there that keep dying within 2 weeks or arriving DOA. But i took the risk the 2 in my NAS spend more time in power saving mode then being accessed due to the stupid hours i now work. With that aside even the drives in my PC have worked solidly over the 6-8 months that ive had them and they are definitely pretty nippy.

The whole "Im not buying because deathstar" joke is old and overused and really bares little to no relation at all to the drives that are being made today other than the branding. Times have changed those 'DEATHSTARS' were in fact IBM made drives that were being relabeled by Hitachi so its not exactly Hitachi's fault though maybe they could have paid more attention to R&D or QC
