I like the Asus CU edition as the exhaust is the full width of the slot (instead of the small exhaust opening like all the other cards)

oh yeah man. :p Gotta love that little "egg" cooler.

Btw- remove the shroud on them egg coolers... it dropped temps for me by 2-3C (idle) and 4-5C load.

It was replaced by the CuCore edition. So idk...

The egg coolers are rubbish coolers by the by.

XFX used them on their 4870s and they idled at 65c

Its just the egg coolers are better then the batman coolers

Uhh.. let me check that one.. I might have had GPU-Z up when I took that screenshot..

Don't use both in the same time just one at the time & close the other one not in use

Well, when tried independent they both read the same tempeture. Right now with Zune Software running (which uses 3-5% GPU load on the HD5770) its at 26C.

You do realize the cooler used on that had the shroud on it and when put in a case w/o a GPU Vent temps can be rather high. Not to mention the HD4870 runs VERY much hotter than the HD5770.

I'm guessing it must be 10c in your room or something then.

( seeing as its around 20c in my computer room at the moment and I'm getting 33)

That way to cold for a room or inside house...lol!
I always keep the temperature inside my house between 22-24c year round (AC in summer)

panther if you so worried about temps just water cool the sucker, you can pick up a gpu block very cheep and i will give ya some memory cooling sinks and mosfet.

That sound ok?

Btw the 5870 series is much warm then that 5770, i will be getting a full cover block soon from my card as i cant stand the noise from the stock cooler on this 5870.

You think 65c is bad ...... try 80c on my 5870 under full load.

Yep! shouldn't worry if the card doesn't go over 85c in full which is not critical for graphic cards anyways...

yes I realize that, I ran it without the shroud myself as it looked shite.

Also yes, that's precisely my point to highlight that its a bad cooler, considering a cheap £15 cooler can drop it down to 40c idle easily enough.

As for watercooling, I don't want to buy a NB block to put on the thing.

Also I really can't be arsed with water anymore, going to sell my set up.

Hell I can barely be arsed with computers in general at the moment.

To expensive and to much fuss.

edit by saying the 5870 is 85c under-load your highlighting how shit the 5770 cooler is, the 5870 is twice as powerful and yet is only 20 c hotter.

A 5870 @ 85C under load? Yikes!
I guess I'm really happy I went with the Vapor-X then. Overclocked and with 22C ambient I peak at load around 62C and idle at around 36C. (And that's buttoned up in an Antec P180B with no side vent.)

those temps don't seem to be a problem to me  - GPUs always run hot. She'll be fine as long as she stays below 95 degrees - i've taken cards to over 105 degrees before (my 4870x2 did that a couple of times on warm days and never gave me trouble for months afterwards, as did my 3870x2 thinking about it) throttling kicks in and they never get damaged, though unless you do a mega OC you should not hit that (95+) on a single gpu card.

Yeah the cooler isn't amazing, but it's all about balance - lower cost vs higher temps - ati always keep their fast cards between 60 and 70 degrees at idle in my experience.

Maybe I'm tripping balls, but doesn't heat tolerance decrease using smaller fabrication process?

Cos I know the ol 95nm chips can take batterings and bakings and be fine and dandy, do that to a modern chip and it be dead.

yes, but unlike the intel hk 45nm cpus these are bulk silicon process parts, which means they can take temps higher than cpus built at the same process size. If it were a cpu i'd say yeah - serious problem there but as it's a graphics card (especially an ATi one, which have higher temps for quieter fan speeds) i wouldn't be worried - my 5970 which is using a vapour chamber is at 60 and i think it's amazing that it idles so low.

i wouldn't be happy if it idled at over 67 degrees, as that's too close to 70 but 65 is not a worry (hot yeah, but nothing to worry about causing damage). i'm used to hot high end chips, which use the same manufacturing process so if the temps are fine for high end, they're fine for low end too - as i said my 4870x2 has been super hot (i'd try to keep it under 95 personally) and idled at about 65-70 degrees but i was never too worried as it's a gpu and can take it. If it breaks due to heat it's covered by warranty anyway. For reference i like to keep my cpu idle at ~40 degrees and don't like it above 80 under load for a while (hence my lowish cpu OC), so it's not like i don't care about high temps.

Have you tried her with higher fan speeds for idle?

Thanks for the info by the way.

I've not, but why would I want to, its idle temps are okay by my standards.

65 load is amazing tbh (for some reason i kept thing it was that at idle, not the ice-cool 33 degrees) - as i said above my 4870x2 idled at near those temps and my 5970 is only 5 degrees lower than that load at idle and runs well into the 80s and i'm still happy to push the oc more without upgrading the cooling. GPUs are built to take higher temperatures, so there is no chance of damage until triple figures on your temp monitor.

I guess I'm just used to seeing 45under full load on much hotter running cards : [

tbh i've never seen a high end card run that cool on air (i still call the 5770 high-end as it is a 4870, which was hailed as the coming of computer christ like a 14 months ago). Maybe i've been unlucky by having hot cards throughout my pc history, but then again i've never had one die or malfunction due to heat, which just shows how tough the little guys are :)

My 4850 , 3870 and 3850 were all below 45 load.

I use after market cooling though.

Only recent card I had that was above 45 was my 4890 which got to 61c when the heating was on in the house.

Whilst I had a good stock cooler on the 4890, can you see why I thought 65 was hot? seeing as my 4890 ran cooler then my 5770!

Its the second hottest card I've ever had XD

I use after market cooling though.

Only recent card I had that was above 45 was my 4890 which got to 61c when the heating was on in the house.

ahh well there we go (i always run my cards on stock coolers, as do my mates around here) - stock coolers are designed to keep the cards under ATi's spec (for price and heat), which is nowhere near that cool - have you tried pointing a 120mm fan at the card from behind, try and blow the air through the cooler?

I guess there's no aftermarket air coolers since the temps are plenty cool enough with stock (especially compared to the 58xx and 59xx cards). I definately wouldn't go water with it btw - waste of money IMO on something which runs that cool anyway.

I can see why you consider this hot, but take it from a stock cooler gpu guy - it's fine :toast:

Maybe I'm tripping balls, but doesn't heat tolerance decrease using smaller fabrication process?

Cos I know the ol 95nm chips can take batterings and bakings and be fine and dandy, do that to a modern chip and it be dead.

You should see the mem io temps on my 4807x2. The hottest gpu has temps hovering just below 100C and I play for hours on end like that.

There was someone in the 5xxx series thread that mentioned that as long as he kept his 5870 below ~75C he was ok for stability for a certain voltage and core speed. If it got above that it would require a voltage bump. I had read somewhere that the TSMC 40nm process is sensitive to temperatures so this may lend some credence to that.

Well my temps are under 75 so I should be good.

Thanks everyone.

Still not sure if I'm going to keep it, just looks cheap compared to everything else in my case, got copper heatsinks all over the place then BAM shiny plastic shroud on my graphics XD

Doesn't fit the theme.
