Specs on the left. First time it happened, but it woke up my roommate  Anybody else ever experience random 100% fan bursts like that?

This was a full startup from off in case anybody was wondering.

I assume it's nothing I should worry about. Just wanted to see if anybody else had it happen.

About once a week, my XFX 5850 will do the full 100% thing at startup, then slow itself down once windows loads.

I find all cards with a built in fan do this from time to time.

My 5770 does it every so often also but never had a problem with it. The way I fix it is.... pull it out, yell at it, then kick it across the room. You gota show it who's the boss. :)

The BIOS goes into hysteresis mode until accurate temperature readings have been handed back by the Driver or hardware logic. It happens to all ATI cards.

Every time I power up my desktop I get a big and low "whoosh" sound for a second or so from the 5970. My previous 8800GT used to do a squealing 'wheeee' sound for that second or so...

I take it it's normal that when a pc wakes up from sleep or gets powered on the graphics card fan works at 100% for the first second or two.

Really? Mine does but it's only for one second. Certainly not until the welcome screen as per OP's problem.

Just one of those things, my card does the same thing right at powerup, Probably checking fitness of the fan, if you feel worried take a air compressor to the fan and shroud and clean it.

My laptop does it to, but sometimes if you wake it from sleep mode, it stuck, providing 100% until you restart it.
