Hello, when I try to OC my 5850 even 1MHz more, the idle clocks change itself to 400/1125 instead of 157/300.... is there any way to force the idle clock to 157/300 when the card is OC'ed?
At default settings idle clocks are fine.
With 157/300 my idle temp is 40c, with 400/1125 temp is 48c.

- I'm using only 1 monitor.

So far as I know this is a universal problem. If you use RBE to look at the PowerPlay profiles for the card you can see it's apparently designed that way. I really hate this issue because it costs me out of pocket.

There are programs that can automatically engage your overclock (via profile) whenever a game is launched and disengage it when you exit the game. This is a near perfect solution to the problem. I think even AMD released a program that can do this. Unfortunately I don't know the names of any programs that do this (other than RivaTuner) because I wrote my own and I like it more.

Just recently with the (accidental?) release of the Beta version of TriXX I noticed that it allowed me to overclock and automatically dropped my idle clocks down to 157/300. Ironically it doesn't drop my vgpu to 0.95 but instead holds it at 1.15V (which is actually above the factory spec'd 1.05V for 800/1000). So close... yet so far...

Or use catalyst 10.4a to get ride of this problem. It was the last catalyst that supports 157/300.

The profile way doesn't work anymore, no matter what clocks I change in Want0, it still will stuck @ 400Mhz 2d

simple fix, flash your bios to the clocks you want (take that as you know are stable) using RBE

Argh, that is most unfortunate.

This issue is such a bother to me that I wrote my own tool to mitigate it. I know that RivaTuner has a per game profile loader but it also does a lot of other crap that has a nonzero overhead. It looks like AMD Overdrive Utility has a similar functionality but only for CPUs...

I'm really hoping somebody will chime in with a simple lightweight solution to the problem.

Very close to the ideal solution but it has a hitch. Some of my games don't respond as well as others with overclocks so I have to have something which switches my clocks on a per game basis.

Still, this may work for aquax.

I've got catalyst 10.10 but my idle clocks are 157/300

I can't have them like that because my card starts artifacting, so have to create a profile using the link erocker posted above. Thing is that whereas before I used to be able to create a profile making idle clocks 300/500 now it persists on being 300/1010 i.e. the memory doesn't downclock at all..

I have mine running full tilt. Don't need 'PowerPlay'. Always thought it ran a little wonky when the card was at 157/300. Then again I don't pay for electricity and everything is watercooled. My idle is 30C (DispIO) 37(MemIO) 32(Shader).

ergo the overclock isnt stable! i did recommend stable clocks if the bios is to be flashed else its just a world of hurt.

idle clocks will show 157/300 if you don't enable CCC overdrive, once you enable overdrive and do little OC, memory clock will go up to the same clock as 3d and gpu clock to 400MHz.. I think the 1000+ memory clock is the most that makes the card hotter at idle more than the 400MHz gpu clock.

I am beginning to think that if you've EVER had a second monitor connected, or you plug your monitor into a different output on the same card, that this screws with idle clocks.

But then, i jsut did a fresh install over the weekend...10.10, single monitor...400/1250 idle clocks for me! And no , I am not overclocking my vga, but it IS factory overclocked. I cannot make heads or tails of the problem.

this is the reason I dont think I will change from the 10.4a drivers. My last electric bill was $450 and I dont need to add to it in anyway.

For the first month that I had my HD 5830 I couldn't get it to do 157/300 idle (and I wasn't using Overdrive). I decided I wanted to OC anyway but the Overdrive limits were too low. I used RBE to remove the limits. By pure luck the HD 5830 started using 157/300 idle after I flashed it.

ATI/AMD has a monopoly on unexplainable crap.

Sweet jesus! Are you trying to feed your kid electricity or something?
