going on the advise of the forum replies, i have been reading video card reviews and i am trying to decide 5850, or 6850? they both seem to run about the same, with the 5850 being just a point or two difference. i know that the 6850 is the more modern card, but checking the web i can get either a 6850 or a 5850 for about the same price. could i get some advise on this? :banghead: i will order black friday so i have a few more days to read more reviews. thanks. sam

5850 is the more powerful of the 2 cards, but once you go crossfire the position reverses. I would get the 5850 (better yet, used) because its more powerful and because I don't think I would need to upgrade from it (crossfire or not) until the 7xxx cards come out at least.

Newegg has a nice XFX 5850 for $185 after rebate. I got one last week. Not a reference card but performs very nice. :)

6850 It is stronger with tessellation by about 20% to 30% (depending) and also is more modern. I would also disagree with the person who said it is not as powerful as the 5850. While the 5850 beats it in some tests the 6850 beats it in others.

If you don't want to worry about that spend an extra couple of bucks and go for the 6870. Beats them both with a vengeance. Overclocks nicely too boot.

Actually, you are quite right. Checking W1z's graphs, I now think the 6850 is about as powerful as the 5850. Therefore, get the cheapest one.

It depends what the person wants, 20%+- performance with tessellation with the 6850 or $70.00 to $80.00 savings on price with the 5850. More than a couple of bucks.

If you are asking the question, then you are sitting on the fence. I'd push you into the 68xx field for the basic reasons of: more mature product line, lower power consumption, fixes to eyefinity, better tessellation performance, drivers that will mature, cooler.

If you have deep pockets and power consumption (and cost) doesnt matter, then you have enough money to buy a better card to begin with, the 6870 or better. I think you want the 6870. Go get it, and stop penny pinching.
