5850 vs 7790

Hi everybody, this is my 1st post on the forum, can somebody tell me which of these 2 cards will give me better gaming performance, specs are different in 2 cards, so I couldn't figure out which one is better.

Personally I would not buy such old tech anymore.

If there is no other choice I'd go with HD7790.

In my opinion 7790 is better.

It's faster, need less power, run cooler, and newer than 5850. 7790 is a GCN based GPU so you probably still get a boost from new driver release.

When the HD 5850 was released some 3 or 4 years before the HD7790 it had a higher placement in it's model lineup than the 7790 had but looking at various specs and reviews it would appear that the 7790 should be a little faster, at a guess (because I cannot find any direct comparisons I would say perhaps 5-10% faster, having said that it has only a 128Mbit memory bus (as opposed to 256 on the 5850) ...... to be honest it's quite a difficult call...... what prices?

7790 all of the way because GCN which can handle D3D12 and Vulkan.

It's just a 7950 boost...both of my cards are flashed and overclocked past the clocks of the 280 bios I snagged.

Wow thanks everybody for the posts, regarding old tech yeah I also know these are old but there are a lot of titles playable. Regarding price, 7790 is 18$ higher than 5850.

So it seems I should go with 7790. Of course there might be other options available, if so I'll get back.

In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the AMD Radeon HD 5850 1GB Edition are marginally better than the AMD Radeon HD 7790

Take the 7790 or else,if u find a good deal like R7 260/265,370, R9 270/X,280/X perfect still days 720p-1080p pack with a good cpu/ram/psu.

From nVIDIA GTX 760/770/780, GTX 950/960/970. For few more bucks is worth it these gpu' i mention.

It should be noted that 5850 is on legacy driver support now where 7790 still has active driver support (and will for some time, because GCN).

Radeon HD7790 is practically R7 260X and as GCN 1.1 card has full DirectX 12 support.

The R7 260X is a rebranded HD 7790 with higher clocks. In other words, they are almost exactly the same.

Regarding your main question, the HD 7790 is better by all means, better performance, lower TDP, support DX12 and AMD is still releasing drivers for it.

The HD 5850 performed almost the same as the HD 6850.
