5870 + 5850 issues

I picked up a 5850 a week back since I found a good deal on one but now I am banging my head trying to figure what is wrong. I currently have the 5870 + 5850 in CF with the 5870 being the top card. My problem is that after about 45 minutes to an hour in any game I get a driver crash and my PC usually doesn't recover. I am using the 10.4a drivers and have tried wiping then reinstalling. I have tried many things to fix this like changing the CF bridge to a different side, manually matching clocks, testing just the new card for faults, but nothing has worked yet. I was curious if anybody else has had this issue or has any other ideas for me to try? I may try switching out the card slots but I really want to save that for last so both cards can easily breathe. I know it has been said this configuration of cards is not recommended but I didn't expect this. Thanks for any help or tips guys this is my first dual card setup so I could easily be overlooking something.

im not trying to be funny here but i have a sapphire 5870 vapor x in my pc and i can run all my games in max settings in 1920x1080 like battlefield bad company 2 and all of the call of duty games and crysis and never have i found the need to have 2 graphics cards, all the games run so smooth.
when new drivers come out and u read what they have fixed there is always alot of things in there about fixing games when using 2 cards so why not just take out the 5850 card and sell it and ur games will still run smooth (no crashing) and u will have some money to go spend on something else. problem solved :nutkick:
the £250 u spent on ur 5850 could have been money saved up to put towards buying an i7 setup maybe ?

Well I tried the 10.5a drivers and got the same problem. I can run most new games on high but I also like to use at least 8xAA and good luck getting smooth FPS in any recent or upcoming game with those setting on a single card even at 1000/1250 on my 5870 most games average around 40-50 with large dips in busy scenes. I have no interest in an i7 setup since a new architecture is right around the corner (2011) that will replace it, besides my current q9550 cand keep up with a 920 in most settings. If I can't figure this out soon I will just sell the 5870 and grab another 5850 since I wont have the extra cash to grab another 5870 anytime soon.

Have you just tried running the single HD5850 on its own, and see if the card is the issue, sounds faulty, oh can you also fill out your system specs for us, it could help us figure out the issue:toast:

I have a 5870/5850 Crossfire set up..... I can tell you from personal experience the 5870 does not like to run as the Main card in this set up....

Try to switch the cards. Try making the 5870 the slave card. Also if you are playing a DX11 game and this is happening.... try disabling Tessellation.... there is a bug that allot of people are getting burned with that won't let you play DX11 games with Tessellation on in Crossfire mode.
If this is the case and it is the same thing you are experiencing..... Switching the 5870 to the bottom and the 5850 to the top will fix it. You don't have to change drivers to get this fix to work. But before the cards are switched I would uninstall Drivers and then reinstall them after you make the switch...... just to stop any would be problems before they start.

I don't know if you have the same problem.... I couldn't gather that information from the little you wrote.
But give it a try ..... you never know.

And if you are thinking to your self "Boy that seems like a waist of money" Yeah tell me about it. ATI doesn't care either...

That is why I am trading my 5870 for a 5850 waiting for the replacement card to come in the mail now.

Good luck let us know.
