Hi every one, I just recently sold some computer parts and have saved for about a month and I am ready to start buying my important components. I was able to keep my CPU, Motherboard, and GPU, as my friend had his own hardware. (He needed case PSU and RAM)

I initially going to reuse my 9800GTX+ as I am getting 250FPS constant in Call Of Duty 4 Pro Mod and BC2 I get on average 60ish frames. But I want to jump a couple tiers and finally think I deserve a present so I am getting a high end 58XX series card. I am looking at a 5870.

Option 1 : XFX HD-587X-ZNFC Radeon HD 5870 1GB 256-bit DDR5 P...

Option 2 : GIGABYTE GV-R587OC-1GD Radeon HD 5870 1GB 256-bit ...

Okay so after that long read of my circumstance here is are my questions :

1) will a 5870 be worth using with a 19 inch monitor? (it supports 1368x768)
2) which 5870 should I go with? I really love the fan design for the gigabyte, but the xfx version is life time warranty so I cant choose.

I want to be able to play all my games at the most extreme, all the eye candy at awesome FPS. I am probably going to pair this with a 940 Black edition and a GIGABYTE GA-MA785GM-US2H AM3/AM2+/AM2 AMD 785G HDM...

Any inputs would be lovely!

Waste of money to get a card that powerful at that resolution, upgrade to a bigger and higher resolution monitor first. Then see if you need to upgrade the GPU after that. The 9800GTX is still a good card, you could ramp up the fan speed and OC it. You already stated very solid performance figures, you won't acquire anything useful from your proposed upgrade.

I love my HD5870, solid performer, have yet to need to OC it to get great performance in games I play. Does 1920x1080 with ease. What's the rest of your system specs?

I have an XFX version, with the center fan, have for about 10 months. It has no software voltage tweaking and the fan gets loud above 60%, but the card stays cool and performance is great, though again I'm running stock and have no idea what it will OC to as I've never tried.

well OC is out of the question, and I dont have specs... all i have is a 940Black edition, and a SLI mobo which wont be useful for me tbh... so i wana sell it some time soon. but this is What I WILL GET!

CPU : amd 940black edition @3.0

mobo : GIGABYTE GA-MA785GM-US2H AM3/AM2+/AM2 AMD 785G HDM...

Ram : Some sort of DDR2 (what ever 4Gig package is cheapest)

PSU : going to old faithful getting a antec earth watts EA650W

and for case getting something cheap but nice in air flow so a fusion.

Since the fan will be facing down in your system anyway, and the difference isn't all that much, you shouldn't really consider the Gigabyte card. XFX has the double lifetime warranty and they tend to have a higher reputation.

if you just run the game on standard resolution it would be a vain, but the benefit has overkill graphic is you gonna have higher fps but it depends to the rig too
for high end graphic i guess you need to look at the package like warranty, game bundled and the apps that offered
for cooling like gigabyte vs stock i guess its up to your taste, personally i would go for longer warranty coz cooling could be tweaked, but its up to you, if you plan to push it into limit custom cooler would be better but if you dont take the stock, the stock cooler aint bad at all

Then the 5870 will kick the crap out of it. You should get around 80-100fps at that resolution.

I'm not sure of the actual frame rate, but I never have problems with running everything on high. Smooth like butter.

I just got done having my ass handed to me in Vietnam, just as I was starting to think I had skills:eek: I usually do very well at vanilla.

its not coz i have money tree, but if you sure its on good condition so take it

At that resolution I think it might be overkill right now. But it also seems that you don't upgrade as often as some of us....( Meaning people like me who spends $300 dollars on a 10% performance increase HEHEHE )

So with that said while it might be overkill now it won't be in the future. As more powerful games come out....you will need more power at even lower resolutions.

I would say go for it. But if you don't want to go after the 5870 and want a comparable card for a cheaper price..... you might also want to look at the 6850/6870/6950 They will all be in about the same price range and 2 out of the 3 will perform on par with a 5870 or better. All of them will be better in Tessellation games which are going to become more popular in the future.

If you don't mind going over to the Nvidia side the GTX460/GTX470 cards are really nice too. And if you wait just a lil while longer you could get a GTX 560 in the near future for around the price range you are looking at.

That's just my take on it :)

IMHO, the 5870 will be fine. With that size monitor, same as mine I'm pumping 2x6850's in CF and 3xGTS 250's in another rig on a similar size monitor. If I were you go for the 6870, it's cheaper and barely under performs to the 5870. I don't think it's overkill, the card will last longer with that res as you will get higher fps and feel no need to upgrade as quickly! :D

haha im kinda surprised most of u guys r agreeing with me XD okay coolio, i will def. be looking at the 5870... thing is tho, the other cards just dont have the processing power that the 5870 does, i def like the 1600 stream processing units, and i can run it fine with a 650W and a amd 940 would run it niceley, also when i sell my 9800GTX+ and motherboard i will usse that for an aftermarket fan for CPU and OC it

I took six different benches with FRAPS, and came out with 55.2 frames a second. I'm not sure what the 20 is, never felt it. That is with 2 windows of IE and object dock in the background, not to mention Fraps itself. Plays nice.

Also, I bought my 5870 used from this site, and have nothing bad to say about it. I even got overnight shipping:toast: Most members here would never sell a bunk card, or one they abused and weren't up front about it.

I wouldn't lock yourself into the 5870, it's a great card, but there are other dooseys. It is getting cheaper by the day. My point is that your processor will drive a new card just fine.

I am still telling yah don't count out the 6870/6850 They have wonderful Processing power. Also for less of a price they will compete on par or a little less then a 5870.

As well as I believe they use less power.... Look into that I am not 100% sure on that but almost sure :)

So you would have not problem running them on a 650watt psu.

But if you are looking for Process power (I.E. Folding) Look at the Nvidia GTX 460/470 either one will be better Folding (Processing) Power then the ATI cards. Plus again you will be able to run them on your Current PSU.

Not saying the 5870 isn't an awesome card..... I have owned a few. It is freaking awesome and you would be happy with it. I am just saying there are more modern offerings out there stronger and less money too.

ur absolutely right sir, i would love a 6XXX card but the only one that beats a 5870 is the 6970 (that i can see) please specify how a 6850 / 6870 beats a 5870

another alternative would be a 6950

5850 is still the best bang for your buck, bro. I would aim for one of those!
