I found this over at Newegg. Can't remember if we discussed this before. Where as the 5970 is really 5850 crossfire in a single graphics card the 5870 X2 is two 5870s in crossfire on a single card with double the memory at 2 gigs per GPU. I wouldn't buy this thing even if I had the cash. The card is out if stock but I think it is interesting and probably crazy to even bother with it. The performance is not enough to warrant the several hundreds of dollars premium over the 5970. :nutkick:

ASUS ARES/2DIS/4GD5 Radeon HD 5870 X2 4GB 256-bit ...

You have to be a lunatic to buy it!!!!!!

its a asus ares card. w1zzard did a review on it!

Really, I can think of so many better ways to improve just about any gaming rig.

Plus it looks like you would only be able to purchase the thing with a $6000 plus combo if they had it. I would rather have a used Camaro or Corvette for that price. :)

Damn!
A killer price tag!
Twice the price of my current budget Rig:laugh:
And that's only a grafix card.
I bet u can get 4 of them in crossfire.

Crossfire is limited to 4 GPUs at the moment. So you could only put 2 of these cards in Crossfire (4 GPUs total).

Never the less, this is a waste. The 6000 series is right around the corner. But owning one of these does make your epeen 24" long.

I still think the best dual 5870 is the Sapphire Toxic version, they seem to be the only ones that opted to overclock beyond 5870 stock speeds, and the cooler is tried and tested.

Hope so!:)
The 6xxx series would be a blast!:respect:
They could add better tessellation and newer features for dx 11 support.
Not that I can think of any!

How is the 5970 like 2 5850s in Xfire? 5970 has 3200 shaders which makes it 2 x 5870....

it has the fully enabled core of the 5870 (1600 shaders) but uses identical clockspeeds to a 5850, which in reality makes it perform almost exactly the same as 5850 CFX.

All the information you are looking for regarding the HD6000 series can be found right here. It is all rumors/speculation at this point, but it makes for a good read.

Edit: Here is a direct comparison between the HD5970 vs HD5850 Crossfire, for your comparison. As you can see, the two are almost identical in all benchies.

I agree with you there man:toast:

having owned a 5870 and a 5850 the difference (at identical clock speeds) is exceedingly minimal, I measured an average of about 2-3% slower.

Which to me makes the 5850 the card of choice because it's a decent whack cheaper, and they overclock like monsters, well reference ones do anyway.

this is why I don't see why anyone should buy these newfanlged 5970 4gb's or 5870x2's or whatever. the extra memory makes little-to-no difference (for single monitor gaming) and a reference 5970 should easily hit 850/1200, if not higher.

The 5970 is not 5850 crossfire, it is two 5870s underclocked in crossfire, the standard HD5970 can be overclocked to the same clock speeds as the Ares card, with some voltage adjustments.

The Ares card is more than that though, it is a real beast, just like the Mars. And yes, it is overpriced.

read the comments on Newegg....so funny...

Other Thoughts: The only card that comes close is the Sapphire Toxic 5970. Both the Sapphire and Ares are dual GPU units with 4GB of RAM, but the toxic (and ALL 5970s) is two 5850s while the Ares is two 5970s. Close, but the Ares takes the lead.

It has 5850 clock speeds

As somebody else pointed out the 5970 is a pair of 5870s at 5850 clock speeds which is basically the same exact performance as 5850 crossfire. The clock speed difference makes more of a difference than the shaders.(1440 vs 1600 per core) Sorry if I mislead anybody but when I said really 5850 crossfire I was referring to the clock speeds. Anyway the ARES cards are totally useless.

Somebody is using a Pentium D!!!!

read the comments on Newegg....so funny...

All I can say is WOW!
Pros: Gets hot fast. Doubles as a space heater for my grandma.

My current build -

Intel Pentium D 3.0ghz
Samsung Memory 4x512mb total of 2gb
Asus motherboard
Compaq Tower Case
Corsair 1000watt modular power supply
Maxtor Diamondmax Plus 9 40gb hard drive
8x toshiba dvd drive
And of course saving the best for last the Asus Ares

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Why buy one when you can buy two for the price of two and share them with your grandma?

That review just can't be real. Nobody could be that dumb. It just aint possible. :banghead:

Pentium D?
Is that thing still alive?
Seriously get a new processor for this card.(a Core i7 920 at least or something).....
And do something about the memory(at least 4gb of high performance DDR3 memory for example).
That card is going to need more RAM believe me!
Just get more RAM.

a 5970 is two down-clocked 5870 gpus not 5850, I'm fairly sure of that anyway, could be wrong.

The SP count is 3200 which means it has to be two 5870 chips.

I would wait for the HD 6800 series first, see how it fairs then make a purchase...

Yes it is! it's alive and kicking bro xD

^ ^ Eh....
I have a X2 4800+ Toledo and it's still alive and kicking....although I have had to remove the IHS.
It is time to retire that chip very soon though it served me well :)

Some people upgrade because they want the latest (whether they can afford it or not) and then there are some people upgrade when they see the latest games or apps pummeling their system.
