oh i totally missed that you had TWO 5970's, thats quad crossfire. that changes things.

the CPU requirements to feed the cards goes up in crossfire, so its quite possible your 4GHz i7 is bottlenecking them. when you update to the new drivers, try just the one card first and see how it goes, then add it back in to compare.

Catalyst 11.2 CAP4

* Crysis 2 - Improves CrossFire performance
* Dungeons – Improves CrossFire performance with forced on Anti-Aliasing
* Crasher – Forced on Anti-Aliasing through the Catalyst Control Center has been disabled
* Shogun 2 (DX9 version) – Improves CrossFire performance
* America’s Army 3 - Improves CrossFire performance
* Flatout: Ultimate Carnage - Improves CrossFire performance

Sidenote:
Once you got everything sorted the way you want try the game without the Cap. Then with the Cap to see which gives you the best performance.

dude, he has two 5970 cards already, upgrading to a single 6990 won't help him.

Scaling is much better on the 6990 than on the 5970, let alone on two 5970.

you might need to format then, to get this back to how they should be. could be related to your performance problems as well.

Scaling isn't the issue here, and that doesn't change the fact that TWO 5970 cards give more performance than a single 6990. Going to a single 6990 would be a downgrade for him. Considering he has three 30" DELL 300WFP 2008 monitors, he needs all the GPU mussle he can get. Why would he want to downgrade instead of figuring out why he's not getting the performance he should be getting from his minimum $1000 worth of video cards(current used value from what I'm seeing from a brief reveiw of the used 5970 cards for sale).

Buying a new 6990 is not the best solution at this point. :slap:

wait... 3x 2560x1600 monitors and your wondering why performance sucks? if hes trying to run eyefinity the cards dont have enough vram, thats a simple enough reason as to bad performance, you can stack all the damn gpus you want together but if they dont have the vram to hand the resolution its all for nothing, this is common sense, if hes running just 1 2560x1600 screen then its still a mixed bag aka performance can drop depending on the game due to vram.

also physx is not in Dragon Age 2, aka its cpu driven not gpu thus the gt220 you were using was worthless in that title, possibly causing a driver conflict,

but lets get some key info

2x 5970s in quadfire tend to scale like shit, after the 3rd gpu theres no scaling aka usually 5970 + 5870 scales better then 2x 5970s,

gt220 dosent do squat in Dragon Age 2 so potentially a driver conflict and it dosent help performance.

reinstall windows use the new 11.4 drivers and check the system from scratch,

even then if i can get games that are 5 years old that use more then 1gb of vram at 1920x1200 its even easier to to hit that vram limitation at 2560x1600

when i go home
1:) remove GT 220,
2:) change spacing of the ATI cards(right now on atop the other)
3:) clean sweep drivers
4:) download ATI drivers(which version you recommend)
5:) come back to the topic and reply
Yes, very good. Dont forget to smile, nothing like a good optimism now and then

any, that have crossfire (or SLI) profiles.

the problem is that as you add more GPU's the CPU usage goes up to feed all of them - and since memory does NOT add in crossfire (or SLI), you end up video memory limited sooner or later as well.

that is pathetic! do you have GPU-z?? can you use the gpu-z to save your bios for each card (4 in total) email me with them (pm me for email) ill check out the bios to see if it is a bios proble. its easier for me to do it myself then try to explain it. also set gpu-z on the "sensor" tab use like furmark or something and take a screenshot/video while furmark is running and post it here so we can see whats happening with the cards in realtime

Have you checked that the cards are running at pci-e 16x? You can check that in gpuz. Those preformance figures are as if they are running at 4x or something.

they are running at Pci express 2.0

now i am playing dragon age and it is not slow but still gpu 3 and 4 are running at 157 mhz !!! NON stop. why does it run at 157 mhz?

Because you need to reinstall windows. This was said an entire page ago. There is an error somewhere in your install and its causing the driver to not work.

So what if re installment doesn't work?

what if it is a hardware fall? how can i know that for sure?

if that's the case i can upgrade to 6990 and pay the difference.

on the other hand i tried to install 11.2 and nothing happened. the installation goes through(after crashing).

i removed the Nvidia GT 220 and nothing changes....

other issues?

i have a Tagan 1100 WATT PS which gives energy to the CPU, the MOBO, the 2 graphic cards(make that 3) my Xonar card, my cooling station, my 2 SSDS and one HDD, my DVD and my Bluray. Do I need to upgrade my Pwersupply?

@ Barbaricsoul. I am going on a big business trip and i do not want to reinstall windows 2 days before my trip(it can wait) but i tried to do everything else

1:) removed Nvidia no change
2:) removed ati drivers and isntalled 11.2 no change.

both cards run at 70 celcius and 2 of the GPUs are running at 157 MHg and 300 Mhz memory clock. I am very sad. will try to remove one of the cards to see what happens. i have already contacted my Pc vendor and told them about the problem and that i am interested in upgrading to the 6990

As for the power will that be ok?

How do you know it won't work until you try like I said this isn't the first time I have seen xfire only working with one card. I have run quadfire all the way back to 4x3850s and right now have a rig running dual 3870x2s something in yoour windows install is botched. I am willing to bet driver conflict.
