Hey guys, just got a new EVGA GTX 770, yet , so happy, I also got some white braided extensions which look amazing in my build, they make such a big difference, the thing is, they are 6-8pin adapters, my PSU does have 8 pin connectors so I don't need an adapter, will it make a difference, I'm guessing it will and you'll tell me to buy an 8pin-8pin extension but I thought it was worth asking incase you say, actually no, it makes no difference, use the adapter.

I don't recommend using a 6 pin to 8 pin adaper, I'd use 8 to 8 only. It might be safe-ish, but I wouldn't take a risk with a shiny new card :)

if your psu has 8pins connector you dont need to use extention, except maybe your cable is too short so you need to use extention

Not exactly sure what you are asking.

"Is a 1x 6-> 1x 8 pin adapter safe?" - while technically they are outside of the specification, yes, I use them all the time and never had issues. as long as you have a somewhat decent PSU.

When doing a lot of plugging/unplugging (more than 100 times, like on my vga test rig) the little pins in the female receiving end of the adapter tend to get pushed inside the plastic and will have bad contact.

"Is a 2x 6-> 1x 8 pin adapter safe?" - yes, perfectly and within spec, but personally I'd use a 1x 6-pin adapter any day just because it's less cable mess

That's what I thought but wanted to double check, I need more white braided extensions anyway, 24 pin and 8 pin CPU so I'll get an. 8-8 gpu too.

It's just because it a white braided extension for appearance, looks amazing.

It's a 1x6 -> 1x8 and I have a cooler master prom 700w

He wants to use the extension cables because they are braided and look shiny

If W1z says they're safe, go with that, I was being overly safe. But I wholeheartedly trust W1z's advice, so it would save you buying more extensions needlessly.

If you had a full on Ham-Mode PSU that cost you £25 at your local PC shop, I'd immediately so no way in hell though.

One more thing I want to say is that, the 8 pin isn't one solid 8, it's a 6 and 2 and they are a very tight fit, the extra 2 pins in the adapter are not dead straight, is that something to worry about?

All 8 pin cables are 6+2 (at least every single one I've ever had have been), and a lot of the time they're a pain in the ass to fit in. If they're a little bent they should work still, but don't go forcing something in if nothing's gonna give.

Not just that, I will only go for the looks if it's not hindering the functionality, but if I can have both, I will, if the 6 -> 8pin was bad, I'd get a new 8 -> 8pin. The appearance of my PC is important though and with all the options out there, why wouldn't it be.

Your 770 is a 6 pin and an 8 pin correct? Thats how mine is (just received today). You can buy 8 pin to 8 pin and 6 to 6 pin sleeved extensions, I have a few. If its that important I'd just buy the right extension. With my 7970 when I used the extensions, I wanted matching extensions so I just used two 8 pin extensions. I trimmed the edge of one of the 8 pin extensions (just cut into the plastic connector between the plugs, didn't change functionality one bit) so it would fit into the 6 pin hole, it still retained functionality but I didn't hook up the corresponding other side and the extra 2 holes sat on the side unused and unplugged. The way I trimmed it didn't intrude on the individual connectors just removed a bit of extra plastic between them.

The extra 2 pins are grounds, so a 6 pin to 8 pin shouldn't matter with the right capability power supply because the ground is common. I am not an electrical engineer, this is just my assumption so I could be wrong.

I ended up just buying more extensions, the ones I have are all sleeved as one and not very well either so I got; 1x24pin, 1x8pin CPU, 1x6pin PCI and 1x8->8pin PCI individually sleeved, no worries at all about functionality and it will look great, best of both worlds.

I love it, having Internet problems but it's not my PC, think the routers gone. I OC'd the card with EVGA precision, I need to look into the best way to OC the CPU, bit of an OC noob, once it's done I'll post benchmarks for everyone who helped to see, is there a thread for that?
