If your 580 is struggling @ 1680 x 1050 i would be inclined to think there is some other issue, that card should be able to push 1080p++ :)

BTW... Follow up on power consumption.

IDLE WATT CONSUMPTION. Technically CPU @ 1600MHz. 117 watts
i7 2600@ 4800MHz, MSI GTX 580 Lightning @ 900MHz core
2 SSD's, 1 optical drive, 3 HDD's, Noctua D14 cooler, twin 240mm fans.

Loaded WATT CONSUMPTION. 333watt / spiked to 346 watts (just missed the pic)
i7 2600@ 4800MHz, MSI GTX 580 Lightning @ 900MHz core
2 SSD's, 1 optical drive, 3 HDD's, Noctua D14 cooler, twin 240mm fans.

I think my AX850 would be just fine with another GTX 580 in SLI.

580's have been goign for 300$ on ebay since the 680 launched. When that happened with the 480, it was only a couple weeks before the etailers started to match it with rebates or base price drops. MSI even had a hydro cooler GTX480 for 300$ a few weeks after the 580 launch.

so while the 680 would offer a better performance per watt, I think a second 580 would net you a better overall performance and better performance per dollar (which really is all we care about)

That being said, you need a new monitor to really take advantage of sli. I know I'm on 480 sli with a 1680x1050 monitor due to budget restraints after I got the dual 480's.

So Check out a decent budget 1080p monitor + a second 580 and see if you can swing it.

If you can't it may be more beneficial to look for a deal on a larger resolution monitor (bigger than 1080P) and wait for the next gen to think about a gpu upgrade. A gtx 580 is no slouch and really higher resolutions always beat out AA and AF. Your 580 should still handle all your games at a higher resolution for a good time to come.

The only reason i said what i said was because you want to upgrade, @ that res of 16 x 10 your card will easily push it to max, hell a 470 would push that res. If you intend to go to a larger res like 19 x 10 or 25 x 16 then you may have to turn some thing's down but i still think that 580 is a powerfull enough card and shouldn't need more

Unless of course you just want the latest, greatest, fastest

I'm the person who bought 20mmrain's 580s :D and I have virtually the same setup as you do. Same PSU just a 2500K clocked at 4500MHz, stock clocks on the 580s (I just don't see the point in OCing these). 1xSSD, 1xHDD, no optical drive, bunch of cases fans.

So far the SLI setup has been working perfectly. I stress it about every other week to make sure components are running fine. Nothing has gone wrong, PSU holding fine, no weird noises, no shutdowns, no crashes, games run fine all maxed out. So ya you don't need to worry about the PSU requirement if you do add a second 580.

Honestly looking at the 680 just to not deal with SLI issues.
So I will have a 580 for sale soon enough. :)

single cards are always more stable, plus you get to play with new tech and use less power at the same time. Prolly the cheapest option as well due to the sale of your current card.
