Good afternoon!

Just debating on my next purchase.. With only limited information and benchmarks on the 680 I am in limbo about whether I step up to a 680, wait for a 690 or just pick up another 580 and sli.

Decisions, decisions.

If it were me, I would wait for the 680 to release and find a used 580. You may have to step up on the power supply though.

Then I'd look for a a fancy 120hz or 30" IPS panel to go with the absurd graphical quality you can display.

I guess not. I don't know if he has a lot of peripherals attached or a high oc. I did say "may."

Didn't mean to make it seem like a requirement.

pretty sure my AX850 is solid for SLI'd 580s.
my OC is at 4800MHz right now... high but not crazy and the AX850 is solid.

Then yeah man, go for another 580 and a nice monitor, unless you really want a 680 on release.

Not so sure. My GTX 580 Lightning (clock at 832MHz) has a stipulation on box of 700W or greater with 42 amps. Thats just for one card. The power requirement (accord to box) is based on a system running an i7 @ 3.2 (Nehalem I presume).

edit: lol, just read your specs - you have the same card as me.

850 watts for GTX 580 sli + heavy overclocked cpu = possible BSOD a plenty.

Wait for the 680 to show up and decide then. I think to be fair the 7970 may be a better card than the 680. But there is also speculation the 7990 is coming in April, so too in the next month is the 690.

no real hurry, I know the prices are gonna drop. Considering I can pick up a new 580 for $400 right now, I expect prices to get even better in about a week to 10 days.

An AX850 will not cut it you will be pulling around 960w you will want to upgrade to AX1200.

Also I would wait, the 680 will consume less power.

You have a 22" monitor? 1680x1050? You need another 580? Why is that? Problems with certain games?

Wait and see. Next week the 680 will be out. It all depends on the money you are willing to spend. Another GTX580 will be the cheapest solution for improving your gaming experience, will smoke a 550$ gtx680 and I think your PSU will hold.

Just elaborating off your post:

Vsync and max the crap out of your games? Add another 1680x1050 and mess with NV Surround for a bit!?

If you are itching for gpu power, then wait for gtx680 release. Then see how much better they are than gtx580. Then decide if it's worth it to either buy a 2nd used 580 for cheap and go sli, or step up to gtx680s. Of course there will be something even better coming in the gtx6xx series after the 680, so you decide. The 2nd 580 will let you pound games into the ground for now, and save you a ton of dough....

Yeah I would go for the second GTX 580 because a single GTX 680 won't compare anywhere near close to a GTX 580 SLI setup. I know this factually! The only way I would go for the GTX 680 is if you just want one really bad! Then go for it.
Next I owned two GTX 580's for most of last year..... you need more power then what you have and that is a fact. Especially if you are overclocking. Sure you might be able to swing it for awhile with that PSU but you will be putting way too much stress on it. I saw my volts from the wall Spike at over 900w with the set up I had at that time. (Granted I am Water cooled and have a lot of other power components ) But still man.

I can vouch for this, an 850W PSU might be enough to boot your system with dual 580s, but once the going gets tough and you start stressing your system under full load, chances are your PSU will be the weakest link, I would recommend a 1000W power source.

Having said that, barring very specific cases, I highly doubt a single 680 would top a dual 580 SLI setup, I would recommend waiting a week or so for the 680 to release and then get a 580 on the cheap, you can already find 580s for less than $370 after MIR, and prices will only go lower than that as retailers try to rid of their inventory :)

I suppose I could pick up a 1k watt psu, but I could also just add my CM 750watt back in to the mix as well. I just picked up this AX850 this week, go figure...

I will wait and see what happens next week...

Where did you get your AX850? you may be able to call them and say it wasn't enough power and ask if you can return and pay the difference for an AX1200 or something that way your set for a very long time. And not out as much money if you go the 580Sli

This

Get a new monitor first, as is right now a 580 should run everything at near max settings at smooth framerates at that resolution.

Don't upgrade at all unless you're planning on a hefty monitor upgrade or going eyefinity.

Speaking from experience, I was using an LG 1680x1050 (same resolution as yours) when I had the 8800GT (a faaaar older graphics card!) When I got me an HD5970, it was really wasted on my system. Started using near its potential only when I got a 2560x1440 monitor. And the 5970 was released even before your current 580...

Newegg... Do they do things like that? I have never asked.

I have never tried it, but Newegg is really nice. You may have to pay shipping, but it never hurts to try, worst thing they can do is drop a massive Egg on your home.

EDIT:

EDIT2: also as some have stated if you go with more GPU PWR than I would get a better Monitor you can check out this thread for a really good deal.

As many others have stated... I am going to wait and see what happens with the 680.
I am turning on V-sync and maxing out BF3 tonight to see where I really stand. If my 1680x1050 resolution is going to be holding me back anyhow there may be no point in upgrading gfx cards until I pick up a new monitor.

Things on the inside of the case are much easier to upgrade as the monitor stands out a bit much. The joy of marriage.
