is a 6800 a good overclocker? in other words, is a normal 6800 a downgraded 6800GT?? are the 6800-6800gt-6800ultra the same board but at different speed?

anyone?? I just want to know if a normal 6800 can be clocked like a 6800GT/Ultra or it's a different card with different specs

If its an AGP, the pipes on a normal 6800 can be unlocked to match that of a 6800GT/Ultra, though the additional pipes can turn out to be faulty. Its luck basically. Most 6800 cores can be clocked to GT or Ultra speeds if you have proper cooling. Memory is another thing though as normal 6800s usually have lower rated rams.

Yeah my board is AGP...are there some brands that are known for better unlocking?..I mean, is there a brand a brand that is known for better success of pipe unlocking?

eVGA is the best brand for 6800, it has a 2 year warranty, and the 6800GT heatsink. Mine didnt unlock to 16 pipes but overclockc nicely :)
But its about a 50/50 chance of unlocking with eVGA's from what ive seen.

indeed.. I've heard leadtek ones have a good success rate. My previous asus 6800 had defective pipes. Its karma.. have you been a good boy lately? :)

hmmm.. havent heard that one b4.. the one that I know is unlockable is the pci-e variant as it uses a different core.

All 6800 series have the same core. They all have 16 pipes, the LE and np have some disabled (8 and 4). These disabled pipes can be enabled using rivatuner witha decent succesrate. It shouldn't be ahrd to have a GT run at Ultra speeds. The LE won't reach those speeds but can run with 16 pipes if you're lucky, if not it can still run at 12. I believe the np uses DDR just like the LE, so memory wise it'll never be as fast as a GT/ultra, it gets close enough though.
Whichever you buy depens on the local pricing and how lucky you feel.

Not exactly. Earlier GeForce 6800 cards were built using the AGP based NV40 GPU. However, NVIDIA now has a 0.11-micron GPU (NV42) meant sorely for the GeForce 6800 PCIe. Previously, with the AGP version of the GeForce 6800 that technically had 16 pixel pipelines, users could try to unlock the remaining 4 dormant pipelines; there is absolutely no chance of that with the NV42 as it is is a revised silicon with a far leaner transistor count and all of its 12 pixel pipelines, along with 5 vertex units are in use.

That's rather evil. So basically you'd have to get an older card. Guess I got lucky with my last swap then, got a refurbished crap card but it did unlock to some extent :)

Thanks for the warning though.
