the 6870 really doesn't seem to improve on the 5850 when it's oced. Am I wrong?

If it beats or encroachs on the 470 in performance, has OC headroom, uses lower power consumption, has 95% or better CF scaling, etc it's a win at that price. From what I've seen so far it does and the use of MLAA maybe a game changer as well. Remember, these are midrange cards. There is still the 6950/6970 next month. Both of which may beat the 480 based on the 6870 results so far IMO. Oh and don't forget SuperBiiz

It comes close to matching a 5870 at stock but doesn't oc well and it appears to me a 5850 will match it or beat it when oced.

here is a full review of both cards http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=261110

I loved my 5850, and if i still had it, I wouldn't sell it in favour of a 6800 card, to me the 6900's will be the true successors to the 5800's, no matter the changed naming scheme.

Have you checked out W1z's review. OC doesn't appear to be a problem as it matches a 480 in COD4.

Thats one game and it's appears to be a waste to me if you have a 5870 or a 5850 lets face it they weren't power hungry to begin with and are not all that hot. These are decent cards but not anything to make you go and sell your 5850. Overclock it to the same speeds as the 6870 and it will match it or exceed it no problem. The 5850 always had way to low of a clock and ran 10 percent lower than a 5870 to begin with.

Understand that the 6870 and 6850 are not the replacement for the 5850/5870. The 6950 and 6970 are the replacements for them. However, the performance of the 6870 encroaches on the 470 and 5870 at stock clocks. While stomping a mud hole in the 460s. When overclocked it's shown to encroach (and beat) a 480 in W1z's review.

I understand that and the same can be said in some games for max oced 5850 and 5870 cards. I'm addressing people selling their 5800 cards to buy these cards do you understand that. One bench hardly makes it on par. In that same bench slightly overclock a 5870 or 5850 and you will get the same result.

Less noise, less heat, better tesselation, possibility of 3D, and only 40$ more to get to a 6870

plus resell value is gonna be better

I'm upgrading :)

also, the 6850 is only 1 power connector and 9"? Great for SFF PCs

Did I forget better CFX scaling? That's hat I hated about the 5850s... Seriously, 2 460 768mb could match a 5850CF....

That is true but any crossfire is a pain driver wise. ( not as bad as it used to be but still a pain sometimes) You might be better waiting for a single gpu higher end card. However, two of these cards would be good and not cost that much.

Yea, and anyways by selling my 5850 I'm GPU -less, can't wait a month xD I doubt paying 25$ for a cheap GPU for the wait will do any good anyways...

Based on how you responded I got the impression you don't understand. Which is why I took the time to explain it to you. The 6800s are the midrange and the 6900 series are the direct replacement. If someone wants to buy one (regardless of what they have) that's their option. The reviews do clearly indicate were the 6800 stands when compared with the 5800 series. So it's not hard to understand what's going on here.

As for how well the 6800 overclocks. So far we have one example from W1z. I'm sure more will be made available as time goes on from both users and other reviews. Other than that, there is really no more say about it.

He does understand it, he was just arguing that if you already have the 5800 series, its not much of an upgrade at all, kinda like going 5770 instead of 4870

My argument is that for the little extra cost and all the extra features, it is probably worth it

Yeah, I noticed him arguing unnecessary which is part of the reason why I don't think he does. In any case, the choice belongs to the user what they want to do. The reviews that will come out/are out clearly tell people what kind of performance to expect. But their is no need to argue about it though. :)

It does help the person who is thinking about upgrading to 6870 from a 5850 choose if he should do it or not ;)
does it really justify the cost? IMO it does, but not by lot... not a must thing to do at all...
but I think it does because of the resell value, the CFX scaling... basically the future :) and all those features might be useful, in the future! also, I find my 5850 to be too hot and noisy, at least when they were in CFX they were really noisy
and I think I convinced trt740 that I am right :D

I feel like doing a happy dance

yea a few more shaders would have been great... just enough to say that you beat the 5870 everywhere and the 5850 everywhere :) after all, the 5750 beats the 4850 everywhere and so does the 5770 vs the 4870

Well here is my thought, if you can get a 5850 for sub 200.00 with a good cooler maybe not but then again maybe. Plus you won't sell a used 5850 for more than 160.00 now, because 5850 are gonna plunge price wise starting today. Then after shipping and fees your down to about 140.00 profit and that might not be worth it. It might be better to buy a after market cooler and wait for a 6970 but again maybe not. Still if your quick a sucker is born everyday on ebay. There is no wrong answer here.

LOL, well there are 2 things to look at IMO:
MLAA and better AF. It looks like MLAA will be included via cat driver so most should have access to that. As for better AF that maybe specific to 6000 series. Now we need to see benchmarks as to how well the 5870 does vs 6870 (we know that the 6970 will perform better) when comparing MLAA. There maybe a few more features as well.
