Well my birthday is coming up and i was told to give ideas to them and naturally i wanted to upgrade my computer to at least something that i can work with. This naturally led me to what i assume as the most obvious midrange gpu's (according to tomshardware). my price is no more expensive than the 750 ti and need at least 2gb vram on the graphics card. so what should i choose.

My ram is 8gb, the cpu is 2.5 ghz quad core and the power supply is a cooler master 500w

All input will be much appreciated.

Well seeing as the Gtx 750 ti is going anywhere from 110 to about 150$
I would also suggest taking a look at AMD R7 265 and maybe the R9 270x
Your power supply is good for both cards not to mention the 750 Ti.

A GTX 750ti price range?

Get this if you can (Most 750ti's are about $150:

Well the 750 ti is faster so there's that ;)

But you should look at the R9 270

I would take the GFX 750TI

since both cards is almost identical in preformance, but the R7 260x uses almost twice the power.

What do you want the card to do? These are what I'd call low-end gaming cards. Mid range would be GTX 960 and R9 280 or 285.

According to TPU's tests the 750 Ti is between the 260x and 265 in performance. http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/MSI/GTX_750_Ti_Gaming/25.html

Check prices here: https://pcpartpicker.com/parts/video-card/#c=164,149&sort=a8&page=1

Nvidia cards tend to consume less power and have fewer issues out of the box. AMDs are usually a little better FPS/$. YMMV. Happy Birthday! (Mine is today).

A 750TI would probably trample him. I say get it.

Well as far as GPU hierarchy goes on the desktop in that area, it goes something like this

R7 260X < GTX 750ti < R7 265 < R9 270 < R9 270X
$112, $129, $128, $154, $169

So depends in the end how much you want to spend, personally speaking I would say the R9 270 would be the best in terms of gaming performance for you if your looking to spend around $150.
