Hello good people of TPU. I am thinking of Finally selling my chip and motherboard and go for a i7, X58 system.

Is it possible to do it with minimal damage to the budget?

You could probably get $250-$300 for your motherboard + RAM, so expect to have to add about $100.

I dont want to sell the ram. I dont see a need for fancy ram just yet...

I use triple channel ram in dual configuration alot, but have not tried it the other way around. Maybe some memory guru will chime in.

(Was thinking most X58 mb's are set up for triple)

Im not too concerned with ram, I dont see a reason why I cant use this dual channel ram on a X58, until I get some new ram right?

X58 isn't triple channel only, it takes dual channel also!

If you live near a Microcenter, i7 930's are mostly OOS, but if you find one, its 180$+tax, else an i7 950 is 230$+tax

As far as mobos go, an X58-USB3 would be the best bang/buck atm, an X58A-UD3R is great, but isn't worth more than 20$~30$ more than the USB3

Triple channel RAM is cheap now, so best time to buy is NOW. 80$ for 3x2GB is a steal, probably 170~180$ for the motherboard, and anywhere from 180~240$ for the i7 920 D0~i7 950. If you want, you could go as far as getting an E5620, great chip, price is around 350~370$ new.

After some googling it appears your memory will work but you will be limited to three sticks (3GB).

No, he can use all 4 sticks... X58 platform can use dual channel RAM like any other dual channel supporting chipset... It just won't take advantage of the tiny speed increase that triple channel RAM gives

Rickss, you can try it if you don't believe me, take a 2gb stick uot of your set up and see for yourself!

I've actually lost money selling games on ebay, because the bids never went over $.99 and ebay only lets you put up to $4 on your shipping for games... priority shipping is expensive.

It should run in a standard dual channel configuration, with the third channel being left empty.

Yes it will run fine, look at my current system specs, i'm running 4GB (2x2GB) Dual Channel on an X58 board (because my third stick died unfortunately).
