7850 1GB crossfire vs 7950 3GB

Newegg has the sapphire 7850 1GB on sale today only, thought of grabbing 2 for CF. Was going to decide on 7870 Tahiti or 7950 but saw this and wanted to check experiences here.

I know there will be micro stuttering issues, but other than that is it worth?

Mainly play BF3 @ 1080P.

For me the choice is obvious -7950.
1gb vs 3gb are not even close.
also this is a pretty good deal for $235 +2 games

Well, 2x HD7850 is pretty powerful, but the issue here is that you are looking at the 1GB HD7850. Not a good choice for CF since 2x 1GB HD7850 is still limited to the 1GB of VRAM available to each GPU. Even though a pair of HD7850 is powerful enough to max out, say, BF3 @1080P, it cannot due to the 1 GB VRAM limitation. Sure, you can still run BF3 maxed out, but you would be hit with framerate spikes as its onboard VRAM is saturated. It is not advisable to CF two relatively powerful1GB cards like the HD7850.

A 7950 clocked between 1050-1200mhz will keep you above 60fps 99% of the time @ 1080p Ultra settings.

Save up for a 7950 like the Gigabyte Windforce and call it a day. Multi-GPU setups, especially with HD 7xxx, do not always work as intended.

7950 no contest. I would only buy a 2nd 7850 if you already had one, don't have enough cash for a 7950 and wants the extra performance right away. Or you have much love for CF/SLI. Or a hot chic says she'll do you if you are CFed or SLIed.

Got a Sapphire 6970 on clearance sale at MC.

SAPPHIRE 100311-2SR Radeon HD 6970 Video Card with...

So testing it out now (6870 vs 6970). Game play seems much better in BF3 multiplayer. Few more days if I am not happy will jump onto 7950. Don't know if the difference will be noticeable (6970 vs 7950) performance wise, but definitely price wise I would have saved a lot.

HD7950, no contest.

HD7850 1GB crossfire would have the raw grunt advantage, but simply wouldn't have enough VRAM to make use of the power.

I would also assume (I havn't run 1080p for a while) that settings that would keep you below the 1GB VRAM limit would be more than playable on a single HD7850 1GB anyway.

The same problem plagued the GTX570.

6970 seems to be doing better so far. I am probably going to hold on to it for sometime, wait for next series or price drop on 79xx to jump onto it.
