7970 worth it?

I think by boxing day, prices of the 7970 will drop to $320 and the 7870 will drop to $200, at least in Canada. Is the performance increase and overclockability worth that extra $120?

The 7970 is a beast of a card thats for sure and at that price id be very tempted. I went with 2 7870's couse at the time price performance was better then a single 7970 or GTX680.

Choice is yours realy

if only i lived in Canada, i would buy 2 of HD7970 with $640 and cf'ing them. in my view, it is very worth with extra $120 to get HD7970 in that price.

I'd get a 7970. My 7950 (may just be my model and its crappy cooler) runs extremely hot and won't even reach 1100MHz. Most 7970s with decent coolers seem to do 1100-1200+ without much of an issue.

Performance per doller is much higher than the 7970. The 7870 runs much cooler and with much less watts if those are important to you. Really depends on how much performance you want. I chose the 7970 myself because I wanted that overclock performance and I wanted 3gb of vram for the 1440p monitor I have yet to get.

These graphs are from the HIS Radeon HD 7970 X Turbo 3 GB. It was wizz'z latest 7970 review. There are cheaper options too making the performance/$ better than this card.

That graph also includes lower resolutions, where the cpu would be the limit most likely, also it does not take overclocking into account.

Correct, but the testing machine is plenty enough to not be a bottle neck for any of those games I don't think.

Here is the link to the other graphs. Easy enough to find and browse for one self.

Actually it does take overclocking into consideration. That specific card is clocked at 1180mhz which is higher than I run my 7970 most of the time. I usually stop at 1100mhz although I can go to 1200mhz.

Satisfied with my 7970, even though it isn't OCing as high as I'd like. I have to keep in mind it's an OC model anyway. Just remember that buying later in the model cycle can result in less of a chance to get a high binned chip, unless it's an uber model like Vapor-X that you pay Xtra for. LOL

I haven't even had my 7970 stable as high as 1080 yet, let alone 1180, but then I only paid $330 for it. The 7970s that are 1100 or more core are $450 and up.

(EDITED)
Seems to be running stable at 1100 now after lengthy sessions of Far Cry 3, AC3, Hitman Abs, etc, so that's what I'm going with for now.

Runs pretty cool and quiet at stock fan speed too. Never gets above 65c in Far Cry 3, which is a fairly demanding game at max settings and 1080p.

I Have the Gigabyte HD7870 OC Windforce 3x, cool and quiet are an understatement, like its totally inaudible and clocks out of the box at 1250, with a very minor voltage hike it will run at 1300mhz, I went for this purely because bang for buck its fantastic, however if you really need the extra bit of performance and/or the extra 1GB of memory, well then you have answered your own question :)

Go for it.

I got mine a few days ago, will have overclocking figures up soon, too.
