The 8800GTS is better, but I'd personally only get the 640Mb one, although the 320 is still good :)

What do you mean both sets of card run hot? My 8800 GTS 640 stays very cool, even with a pretty steep overclock on it.

Depends where you are, I dont know where he is but I can get a 320MB GTS in the UK for cheaper than a 2900Pro. Having said that, my choice would be the 2900Pro but TBH, if he eventually wants a 2 card solution the power consumption of 2 Pro's overclocked is like serious.

Just for the record, 2 x 8600GTS is pretty damn near to the 320MB 8800GTS performance wise and will not consume any more power which is the sweet thing, if I was going SLi though with lower/mid range cards personally I would get two 512MB 8600GT's, anyone with the 3rd party cooling as standard on them and overclock the hell out of them....IMO 512MB is needed for DX10, I might even pencil mod each of them easily and overclock them in excess of 8600GTS speeds!

But anyways, I too would choose the 640MB card over the 320MB if it has to be NVidia.....little point if you are going to go SLi haveing all that memory swapping slowdown in DX10 with 2 powerful cards just cause you only have 320MB on board, of course if you are only playing at 1280 x 1024 resolutions that shouldnt matter too much!

Mind giving me a link? I can get a 2900Pro for £150, but the cheapest 8800GTS 320 I can find is £180.

Their out of stock at the moment! but this is the one I was thinking of:

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/125114

This is also free delivery so this is what you pay.

The cheapest 2900pro I had found was a couple of quid more, unless you have one for £150 of course, if so I might just be buying one and selling my Gainward! :toast:

gts just cause it leaves you for room to sli up the gts in the future. plus you'll have less heat and power consumption in your system with a single card.

Wait until The 8800GT comes out and the prices of others drop a bit, or hold out till the 9800 and watch all the 8 series prices drop, either way.
The rest has already been said.

Benchmark Scores Nyooom.
8800GTS is a LOT faster than 2x 8600.

As always in SLI threads - SLI doesnt add GPU memory. so a 640MB GTS compared to a pair of 256 or 512MB 8600's, the 8800 really shines.

Not to mention its just a lot faster all around...

Personally i'd say the 320MB if you're gaming at a resolution less than 1280x1024, but if its 1600x1200 (or 1680x1050) or higher, go the 640MB - let your monitor decide the card you get.

oh and if you're waiting, the 8800GT might be a real nice option. should be cheaper, yet still a ton faster than an 8600.

Your right.....in many things, in quite a few others.... not, take a look at these, yes I have selected some biasly but as I said, it aint a lot quicker or as quick in many things......please bear in mind also that in these tests, the 8600GTS in SLi was against the 640MB 8800GTS!

I have included some synthetic and real world benches.
