Do the optys use AMD's Dual Core Optimizer? If so, make sure you've got that installed too; a must have for some games.

Ya I installed it, same thing.

And I pretty much agree it's my CPU :(

I have the desktop counterpart (X2 3800+) and while I more than doubled the processing power of my video card, I only saw a 40%-50% improvement in many of the games that I play like UT3 and PVK II. In fact, I saw no improvement in UT3. While the power of your opty is limited compared to newer Intel CPU's, remember that a 2.5ghz X2 or Opty is equal to a 2 ghz Core 2. You shouldn't really be seeing that much of a speed issue in games.

Either Intel is getting developers to optimize their games for Intel processors or the limited cache of AMD's processors is causing problems?

Regardless, if you can get your Opty to 2.8-2.9ghz you will have no reason to upgrade to Intel now. Wait until Bloomfield comes out and then look at making the switch.

I don't know but I think the new architecture of the core 2 duos is much better than the old opteron/ x2 stuff. And I saw on benchmarks that a X2 4800 got rocked by a E6700 on some
game or application. I think it was on the tomshardware CPU charts.

Also I will try to OC my current CPU but the games I have "issues" are mostly RTS's and MMO's which require processor power. All the FPS's I play (STALKER/HL2) are rocking at amazing FPS with the highest settings.

I agree with the lack of cache on the Athlon line  2mb L2 for the top of the range cpu the 6000 and the 6400 while intels E8500 offers 12mb L2 cache and that's their top dual core.

Yes but Intels CPU architecture requires much more L2 cache than AMD to function to it's potential that in the main is why there is such a difference.......have a read of this......

All right so this summer I'm getting a new CPU. That means new motherboard and RAM. I picked these.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231122 RAM

Either a Q6600 or a E8400. Which I cannot decide yet.

A new PSU as well http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139006

What do y'all think about compatibility and such. Also I would expect to see performance boost from it. I will be OC'ing the CPU so I'd appreciate any suggestion for a good cooler. I'm using the Antec SuperLanboy Tower (midsize thing). Main thing is gaming but I heard the Q6600 is more "future proof".

IMO that will do you fine, I have owned two Q6600's but I dont see them particularily future proof for gaming, there are VERY few genuine multi thredded games out there that have the ability to effectively use more than 2 cores and the thing is, developers still are not bringing many to the shelves, if you look at a game such as Supreme Commander, whilst it is multithredded, clock for clock over a dual core, a quad core only on average improves performance by 3%, when you couple the lower volts, less heat and generally higher overclockability of a modern Intel dual core then in fact you can get more performance out of that.

Personally I would stick with your motherboard selection which is fine, I would save a little cash and downgrade to an E8200 which is easily capable of 4gig, it has the same 6mb L2 Cache and in gaming terms, once you get above bout 3.6gig you will see little difference from your dual core, as an example, in Crysis you would see no difference between 3.6gig and 3.8gig in the game.

Lastly, with the money I saved on the CPU, I would upgrade the memory to 4GB of the GSkill PC8000 for a little more overclocking headroom, this is a really good kit and for the price, is one of the best 4GB kits......................

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231145

Just noticed the memory is the same price as you selected!.............bargain!

Very lastly.....:) The PSU is fine also, Do you really need 750W? I would perhaps save a little money and go 600-650W but Corsair is a pretty decent brand.

That kit is a good price, but don't expect phenomenal oc, they aren't d9s. They do seem to be powerchips possibly, although I don't know how they oc. Still a great price for pc8000, I'm debating getting them now myself.....

Thing is, they overclock better than most 4GB kits including D9's, it's pretty difficult to get 4GB kits that will do over 1100mhz, there are a few around but these are certainly near the top especially for value.

Ah, have you tried them and got them over 1100? If so how far have you gotten them?

That kit seems nice. Though I have read that there's some issues about the voltage they require and the motherboard, having to change them manually if they don't boot or something like that, being the motherboards stock ram voltage 1.8v. Also, it reports it to be DDR2 800 :O. And lots of DOA/faulty problems as well.

I mean are those sticks that I picked really not going to be able to OC an E8400 to 3.8+? I could totally go with both, just want the most reliable ones.

Seems they are not really good overclockers from the reviews on newegg.

*Sigh*

So I installed Far Cry and I seem to be getting worse performance than the one I was getting with my old X1950XT. Settings are the same. I mean, in doors is like a billion fps, but when I go outside (the first part when you get the pistol) I Seem to be getting 40 and dipping into like 30 in firefights. Same in the same part where I get the first car, and on the large boat too. It's frustrating. Does a bottleneck actually cause a decrease in performance?

Absolutely it does. All that information the gpu is processing is not being moved around quick enough on account of a processor that can't keep up. Your not really using your whole gpu in effect, just what the cpu can handle of it.

That applies to all memory that stocks above 1.8V and is not an issue, I would never run my memory on auto in any case as I overclock it with the FSB and for that you need more voltage, thats what the voltage options are for :D The speed of the memory in relation to the overclocking is not so important as you can set a memory divider to pull your memory speeds back......1:1 is always preferable however for performance and thats where the high end stuff comes in.

I have tried the ones I posted, had them for 4 months before going DDR3, I got them to 1130mhz, as I beleive it, with 4GB kits, there are only about 5 or so that will exceed 1100mhz and those tend to cost more than the GSkill.

i get those same kind of FPS drops in CoH, well with EVERYTHING at Ultra. But i lowered some things, shader to high, etc. This should give you a nice boot without any noticeable image quality.

Me too.. but at least you dip into the 30s. I dip into the low 20's and have like 30's just running around in campaign missions. I'm really hoping all this crappy framerates are cause of my CPU.

Gamax I thought I'd post this just to give some kind of comparison iun 3DMark06'

My Rig:-
Stock 2.4Ghz 9181
OC 2.71Ghz 9994

BTW I see no difference in gaming before and after OC.

So in theory if you overclock your Opty to 2.4Ghz, you should get decent performance.
Also if the rest of your components allow, you should be able to overclock the CPU to 3Ghz which erocker did.

Well, unless you are doing a ton of multitasking, the e8400 will be the best option. It's just quicker, and very easy to OC.
