8800 ultra or 9800gx2? MSI sent me the latter when I RMA'd the former...

Note that these are regarding MSI cards, not EVGA.

So my 8800 ultra was not working right when playing trackmania or age of conan, so I sent it in. They sent me back the exact same card (the broken one), so I called them up again, and they paid for shipping, and to have to "replaced".

The problem is, I woke up today, opened the box, and found an MSI 9800gx2 in there.

So the question is, which is better? Even if the 8800 ultra is a tiny bit better, I'd like to know.

Thanks guys, I'm severely confused and have read reviews that only confused me more! :p

9800GX2 is better in performance, only thing better with 8800 Ultra is more memory, but this new one takes less power and should be equally faster with less memory, because they fixed some memory efficiency issues. Just so you know that even though 9800 GX2 got 1GB memory, only 512MB per chip and they works in parallel, so only 512MB is usable for the card.

The gx2 pwns the ultra. You are a very fortunate individual, assuming your psu can handle it :toast:

Fixed :D

The PSU will be fine, it was handling 8800 Ultra all these days, so it should be ablt to handle 9800 GX2.

It seems that everyone favors the 9800 ultra. Fahim, what would the advantages be of having the extra memory on the 8800 ultra? I'm not entirely sure how memory comes into play on graphics cards... but I guess the 9800GX2 still outperforms the 8800 ultra?

Anyone know how much heat it produces?

more than likely it produces less heat than the ultra due to revised gpus they are pretty low heat and it has a good cooler ;) the extra mem wont help you as much as a higher end gpu will

Alright... final question: whats the deal with this? (I'm a little skeptical why they would sent me a better card)

Ah, that would make sense. When they sent me back my old card, I told myself I would never buy one of their products again. This new card has pleased me though.

Since I only have a PCI x16 slot right now (in less than a week I will have a 2.0), should I install it now? It won't hurt the card to be in the x16 slot for a bit, will it? I'm not sure if I would need to reset it or something once I put it in the 2.0 slot or if it would recognize it itself... I do know PCI is backward compatible though.

It will not hurt the card one bit putting it in a PCI-E x16 slot.

You'll be fine. GX2 pwns the ultra. Hell a 9800GTX is better, and the GX2 is pretty much a 9800GTX sandwich (there's 2 gpus on the 9800GX2, and 2x512mb memory making 1GB total)
