8800GS Clock limit

Does anyone know if there is a way around the 680MHz clock limit on the 8800GS that doesn't involve flashing the BIOS? I am planning on picking one of these up, but not if I have to keep flashing the BIOS to find my max overclocks.

what limit look at my 8800GS thread i clocked it to 720

the limit is around 700 Mghz some will do more and some slightly less.

I was able to do 730 Stable fo Benchies, but really only 700Mhz for me was stable when i had an 8800GS it was at 700/1000mhz

The 8800GS is cheaper and I am on a pretty strick budget. The 8800GS is going to cost me $109, the 9600GT is going to cost me $150.

There is a limit set in the drivers, reports are that if you try to set it beyond ~680MHz the drivers automatically set the speed back. Are you saying you didn't have that issue?

Mine is full stable @730 MHz and i could bench it @ 735 but not stable all the time.

I see that the card is driver limited : i can't install other driver than the 169.32 ones. The latest ones ( 174.XX ) are not recognized :mad:

there is almost zero difference at max overclock, for both cards, between at 8800gs and 9600gt

This bench is with my max benching clock.

Does a NVidia driver editor program exists ?

I didn't try to flash my card with a 8800 GT bios edited with my max stable clocks and memory timings.
But i don't believe in a miracle.

I'm affraid in no booting risk.

BLIMEY thats cheap! thats £50 for a 8800gs and £75 for a 9600gt! you americans got it good man.

for comparison:

£50 ($100) = 8500gt
£100 ($200) = 8800gs
£110+ ($220+) = 9600gt

I've flashed my 8800 GS with a EVGA 8800 Gt bios found on TPU bios collection.
I've edited it with NiBiTor @ 720/1000/1728.

First boot : XP impossible to launch : bios infos then ... black screen :cry:

Second boot after reflashing with GS bios : edit of the bios entering " 8800GS " in device area.

Reboot : XP is launching ... but impossible to install GS or GT driver ...

So, i reflashed my card with my " special " bios @ 720/1000/1728 ( starting XFX 8800GS standard bios ).

No way to paradise :banghead:

you tryed something thats impossible, there not the same cards

Yes, i returned to my traditional full stable OC bios.

A forumer said he had flashed his card with a 8800GT bios. I thinked it was with succes.
I'm lucky in my test : i had not to reflash it on my other rig wich has an onboard video chipset.

Maybe someone will give us a miraculous bios :rolleyes:

... or drivers.

It was Candle 86.
I have read again the post ( on 8800 GS thread ) : drivers can't recognized GS flashed in GT. He had to force the drivers instalation but the result is so bad : only 6 rops etc...

... Waiting for a real solution. :shadedshu

no i didnt go look at the GPU-z database and my thread i ran it stable at 720 with no mods what so ever,

lol should have asked me man.

Just off note the cards bios is not memory dependant at all. Nvidia bios detects installed ram on boot. the only reason cards of diffrent mem size has diff bios is for timings as lower capacity memory typically can run tighter timings

You can't flash one card to another, except in very rare cases like you can flash an x800 to an x850 sometimes. 8800GS to 8800GT will fail... it's not even the same memory size.

You can use NiBiTor to edit your 8800gs bios to the clocks you like to run it at and you will never have to worry about installing any software overclocking programs ever again. It's ALWAYS at that speed. The only drawback is if you decide you want to try to push it further you'll have to flash it back to the stock BIOS because the overclocking programs will be like "wtf m8?" and when you try to set a clock it will automatically reset to whatever you edited the BIOS to.

The base must be the same, as with the 6800GT flashable in ultra.
