Currently own an AM3+ 880G motherboard, considering going to Bulldozer in a few months. Not interested in Crossfire or SLI. Is there any reason to go jump ship to the 990FX line? I only need 1 or 2 USB 3.0 ports for an external drive, so the 880G covers that.

no real reason if your 880G has the BLACK socket your good to go, no point in a high end board if you dont need the features it offers.

Isn't that "black socket will support bulldozer" thing still a bit shady ?
Please prove my wrong if you can, but I've never seen a promise from mobo manufacturer that "AM3+ ready" mobos will support Bulldozer. They only say it will support "AM3+ CPU". That's may not be the same...

Black sockets are AM3+ and ready for AMD's FX CPU's. The "shady" thing are AM3 boards with white sockets being able to support AM3. Manufacturers such as Asus has stated several times that the FX chips will work in these boards. AMD is not supporting this, though it doesn't mean it won't work.

Couldn't ask for a finer debunk...
Fine then. So, with 990FX you get 'AMD blessing'. And I've got a gut-feeling this may turn out important.

Coming back to thead's subject:
990FX board always sport SATA 6Gbps, which also may be an advantage, especially when you're considering SSD.

This is good to know as my 890gx board comes with the black socket. I would like to clarify one thing though, with the recent 990(FX) reviews, I noticed that the VRM seem much stronger (and have larger power draw). Is this a concern? I just wanna know if my black socket will take a bulldozer and be able to actually power it

Thanks!

the proper am3+(9xx chipset/black socket) boards support newer low power states, and the older 890 etc board will support bulldozers normal functions,so OCcers wouldnt notice any differences for instance but normal usage would mean not having access to the new enhanced p-states.
Apparently you dont have to have a mobo with a black socket either,as even some 7xx mobo's support Bulldozer's basic functionality

This nugget of info was from Asus, though as Erocker said,AMD want you to upgrade the boards as they have put alot of work into certain new functions.

I don't know for sure but I have a feeling the "important" part of the 990FX will be the use of Turbo and power saving features with Bulldozer. Most 8xx series boards support SATAIII.

Low power state on this computer is when the machines off.
