965 upgrade?

I'm really close to jumping on the new 125W phenom II 965 black for $195. I've had my 6400+ for a couple years now and I'm ready to move on... the only thing i'd regret is if the six-core procs next year come out on am3, but if they're on a new socket then i wouldn't be effected.

as far as the upgrade goes, i hope to run the 965 at 3.8 - 4.0ghz. even without an oc, it would dance circles around my 6400+ (which is comparable to intel E6xxx or E5xxx series afik)

it would be going into my current am2+ board.

from what it sounds like i should be able to hit 4.0 just with a multiplier and vcore bump... i like the sounds of that. even 4.2 is possible with slightly more vcore and 1x higher multi....

yea take it from me i went from a X2 4400+ am2 running at 2.7-2.9 depending on heat and windsor cores were slightly faster then brisbanes anyway the upgrade from the x2 to the 940Be and even at 3.0-3.4ghz it stomps the hell out of m X2 4400 rig and thats just the 940 the 965 is even more beastly

I had this option this week as well and went with a AMD 250(3.0Ghz dual core) I dont see a point till ur ready to get a proper mobo (something that will take full advantage of the 965)

Its not like the 6400+ is a POS...(I miss mine)

For $30 cheaper I say go for the 955. 200 Mhz is not worth $30. This is money to be used toward and stupid huge cooler you can beat goats to death with.

Went from a Phenom 9650 to the 965 C3 and its a night and day difference. Just sold my coworker my other 965 a few hours ago.

well i bit the hook on the C3 965 for $195. IMO the C3 will be worth the money over a 955...

i'll be putting the 965 in my am2+ board and hopefully hit 4.0ghz. then next year, i'll have to option to switch to an 890FX board for ddr3, sata3, usb3, etc as an upgrade

man i love how easy amd has made the upgrade path...

It totally depends on the games you play as to whether its worth it or not. Until July I had an X2 6400+ paired with an 8800 GTX. They were well matched and my main games are WoW, LotRO, Fallout 3, a modded Oblivion and other RPGs. My monitor is also a 1680x1050. I built a new PC with a Phenom II X4 955 paired with a GTX 260 (216). I'm happy with it, but since I really don't have any games that would push the envelope I feel it was kind of a waste. Should have waited another year.
