Well i got a radeon aiw 9800se, i used 3d2001 benchmark and got a healthy 9700 score, i read about softmodding and d/l'd one from this site but it proved to be unstable, so i went to omega drivers and got theirs which unlocked the other 4 pipes and benchmarked again and got 10700. quite impressed,
used ati tool to find max mem and clock settings. which i didnt wait to find out as i thought against overclocking. so left it. all my games now play really well even doom 3. but now when i bench mark i only get 9600?.

it seems that the point sprite score is well down from 40.7 to 10.6. is there anything i can do do get my score back up, or is there and obvious reason this has happened.

pc spec
amd 1900xp
1gb ram
9800se 128mb 256bit aiw

any help appreciated

are you sure the card is running as a 9800 pro and not an se because you should see a much bigger jump than 9700-10700. check using atitool that all 8 pipelines are being used because i've got a suspicion they're not and that the difference in score will be down to different driver IQ settings

Yeah dogg that seems very low the machine in my sig gets 13000 on 2001, and the 9800 should be b marking better than a a overclocked 4 pipeline 9600 series.

@thienchicks, depends on the model mate, the 9800se i had became a 9800 pro when i softmodded it with the same clocks and everything. the scores for 3dmark depend a lot on the rest of the system (especially 01) so it's a bit hard to say what sort of scores someone will get. I think 18k for tommoturbo in 01 is optimistic and 4800 is a bit pecimistic.

Thanks for the replies guys.
i know my m8 who has a 9800se softmodded and gets a 14000 score but he has an xp2800, im currently building an xp2500 which which im going to overclock and hopefully use it for gaming.
At the minute i dont understand much about the 9800se and the mem and core settings only that ati tool tried to find the max mem and core sttings for me but i chickened out atnd put them back to default, which are 390mhz and 297mb, im using smartgart at the minute.
but possibly theres other things holding the score back ?

cheers ian

ahh.. the XP 2500+, such a good CPU... that's the chip I always wanted and dreamed of every night... until I got a 2800+ :D :D

Do you have Vsync enabled? if so, disable it for benchmarking.

Honestly though, benchmarks are getting more and more unreliable now, as proven by 3d'03. Companies use "optimizations" and whatever crap and theres this and that just to up the score a bit so that people think its all good and whatnot. What matters is how well your card works in a game. If you like your card and it works fine in games, benchmarks don't matter anymore. It's just a number I use to compare overclocking performance.

This is ever so slightly off-topic, but I tried the softmod on my 9800SE and got a fair few artifacts on screen. Could this possibly be down to a temperature problem, as I'd happily spend £20-30 on better cooling to get a better card, or am I stuck with them for good? Anyone had any luck removing them?
My system is almost identical to ReconCXs' but the benchmark scores are far inferior.

Ive read up that once the other 4 pipes are released artefacting could be a problem, luckily im ok. Il try and find where i read it and post back, but it is quite common though

Yeah, if you can find it, that'll be a big help. There's a load of forums like this one, but they all say slightly different things. To be honest though, I might just buy a new cooler anyway. The stock one on my card is terrible, it looks like it's made of plastic and the price of an Arctic Cooling or Zalman cooler is around £15-20, which is cheaper than I thought.
