A 2012 Extreme Edition in 2019

Hey guys, just wondering sold my computer due to marriage, I found a deal too good to pass and its here :
- Intel i7 3960x extreme edition
- ASUS P9X79 Deluxe
- Corsair 32GB ram kit ddr3 (8Gbx4)
- Corsair H80 AIO kit
so I cleaned and added
- Corsair TX850
- Bitfenix Ronin
- WDC Green ssd 240GB

it ignited my curiosity, what would you guys pay for this rig now in 2019, I am using it right now having a damn fine experimenting crossfire RX 580, but just wondering how much is it worth.

Tell me your thoughts (even stupid ones are fine), and if you put a price tell it in USD and where youre from, gets me an idea of pricing in your place too. Got a 4500 on 3dmark using single and 7900 on a crosfire RX 580.

Theres still a small market for X79 setups - the motherboards sell like gold dust. I found out the hard way when my Asus X79 Pro died and i didnt want to spend £300 just for a pre-owned X79 board.

Age will be hitting these boards more than anything and id hate to invest money into something what i would call a real ticking time bomb.

Some soul will still buy it though. It has plenty of PCi-e lanes and quad channel memory really helps it keep up with a lot of bandwidth hungry tasks when compared directly with DDR4.

I think you'll get more for it if you parted it out and sold things off separately or as a combo.

Hey seem Im the only one that voted NO, but here why: but first that i talk if you play at 1080p and dont wanna upgrade to higher res my vote is YES you can sell that

but if you plan playing at at 3440x1440 or 3840x2160 that config would be still fine for 60hz gaming or even 75/100! and you better invest in a good GPU or a better cooling (a cooling is forever, a cpu last few years) and no need to sell and swap motherboard and lose a lot of money,
ryzen 4rd gen is coming but we also think about intel 7nm cpu are coming too and they will get same if not more ipc than amd thats my idea!

If you buy a good cooler and keep it at 4ghz you get close perf to ryzen 2nd gen and thats is very fine for gaming.

If you use this pc for productivity you should consider upgrading but not for cpu performance even MT is still very good for almost task in productivity, but for RAM, today ram are very fast, and you could get 4000mhz easy and ddr4 are really fast for doing things, considering buying an PCI-ex nvme SSD is also an option if you plan to not upgrade if you use this pc for production.

my idea is: switch to wide1440p or 2160p and buy a good gpu not the 2080ti but get a 2080Super or 2070Super they perform very well for price and they are not bad buy like 2080ti that is like throwing money into bathroom and enjoy playing at that resolution!

Keep the money, upgrade when the new console came out or also nope, and here's how i would do myself:

-buy a new cooler for cool that cpu and overclock it! Its still an amazing cpu in 2019 IPC is close or even higher than first gen ryzen
a cooler like custom loop or aio i'm suggesting will last even for next build and they are very good performance
h80 is bad for that cpu for get high overclock build yourself a custom loop if you got money or buy an AIO that is very good at pump specs and are not made by aesetek, buy some swiftech h320 or EK predator they both use DDC Laing and they're pretty good and very cheap and they gave custom loop performance or even close!


- buy an nvme ssd if you plan productivity

- upgrade you monitor for gpu limiting and enjoy resolution like wide 1440p or 2160p with an balanced configuration

-spend money on gpu instead of cpu

- drop those crossfire they get well only on game they got supported, and they perform bad for the watt they spend

just my idea, haters gonna hate me for not suggesting you a ryzen build

As someone who owns both a 3930k and 3820, both in a P9X79 Deluxe, I would urge you to get something newer. It will work, but it's a very power hungry platform for what it gets you and that most modern 6c/12t are significantly faster while using less power.

This is all baloney sausage. I had a 3930k@4.6ghz cooled by a H80I and it ran perfectly fine. Never broke 70'c with daily usage. I had this H80i on my 3930k for a year

very nice performance, i had h60 on my old phenom x6 what a bad heatsink and swapped on air, I rarely suggest aio except if you need good overclocking like this case, If you get 4600mhz on h80i imagine what you can get on an swiftech h320 or ek predator, what a nice cpu you had!

youre comparing a 120x120x27mm rad to a 120x120x38mm the extra thickness makes all the difference. I later upgraded to a H105 temps dropped closer to 65'c when stressed. but a H80i is more than adequate for a 3930k without having to spend more money for diminishing returns was the point i was making.

Wow guys, thanks for the posts, was wondering what the real users on the planet was thinking on this unit. I only know one youtuber (TECH YES City) who champions this breed of X79 chipsets and CPU as a great value for money and he put his money in it as his video renderer. This is my first ever i7 unit and its an extreme edition to boot (not rich, but trying to achieve financial freedom). I am over the moon right now but we shall speak volumes downstairs as you have some valid points.

YES they are, I have a cousin who got a good deal on threadripper 2, and wallowing in despair due to the electric bill. I am trying to sell while using it in bliss, whatever happens I got a beast of a system right now.

Bought it a long time ago, ate instant noodles for 1-2 months due to stupidity. I didnt know my motherboard back then (pci-e 1.1) cant run the latest (Pci-e 2.0) out of the box. Upgraded my PSU twice (hence my food budget issue), anyway got my friends advice of emailing the mobo company (MSI) and got their beta BIOS a couple of hours later, happy as can be (My first build of MSI K9A platinum).

For now I downclock and down volt as I can, in Indonesia I have problems to set a good price for it as plenty of people is asking skyhigh prices for these parts. Gold dust huh for the Motherboard? we shall see.

I think the X79 is still an OK system/platform to use still but I upgraded one of my systems not long ago and I was thinking on going with a X79 platform myself and I almost nearly did! Was going to get one of these X79 Motherboards brand new from Ali Express, put a 8 Core 16 Thread XEON CPU on it and 16GB of DDR3 ECM Memory. But i started to look into what I can get for maybe just a little more on the AM4 platform , so Ryzen 1st Gen, 16GB RAM on a B350/450 Mobo. Once I started looking into them both more I found for maybe around $100 AUS more (if that) I could get a Ryzen 1600X, 16GB DDR4 3000 RAM and a near new B450 mobo and so I went with it instead as one its faster! (mainly gaming) and it has alot better upgrade path! will last yrs and yrs where as the X79 would of been pretty much tapped out to the max already with what I was looking at.

So in short yes the X79 would be fine! but if you intend to keep or use the PC for a longer time then I would honestly look at the second hand market on Ryzen 1st Gen.

I did a basic Transcode benchmark between my i7 970 and the 1600X both at Stock speeds and I was shocked how much master the 1600X was over the I7 970, almost double! was not expecting that.

This rule of thumb has served me well for 30 years ...

Rule of Thumb - Take your build cost and then subtract 10% .... then 5% for each month of age for 6 months (60% value at this point) ... then 10% for every 6 months thereafter.

0.5 year old - 60% of build cost
1.0 - 50%
1.5 - 40%
2.0 - 30%
2.5 - 20%
3.0 - 10%

Id keep it ... tell the future Mrs that it's just not worth the T & E for selling.,.. (yeah i know, you wanted me to say that).... but in the end it's not your decision.

I say if it's working, don't sell. My spouse has an i7-3960X that runs at 4GHz, used for photo editing and gaming. It's still very decent and rarely gets over 60 to 65 on an air cooled setup. Plus, there is that old era "Extreme" nostalgia. Seriously, there are plenty of these chips around. The rare items are decent X79 boards, so if you’ve got a good one, be happy!

its really not a bad system if you plan to game at 1080p 60hz.

if this was my system id set the core volts to 1.4v, cpu to 4.5ghz, load line on high, memory to 1866mhz-let it set the timmings, and just game away. if the ram wont do 1866, try 1600 with the primary at 9-9-9-24.


just run it. i have a similar system thats in regular use and does pretty well.

Only very GPU intensive games would pull framerates down, but that's more to do with GPU than CPU.

Can you believe that on large cities that Cities: Skylines gets bottlenecked on my 3930k at 4.75GHz with a Vega 64 at 4k? When I'm CPU bound, my load average is somewhere between 4.0 and 4.5.
