Ok, so I'm putting together a media box; and I'm considering picking up the GIGABYTE GA-MA74GM-S2

or

ECS A740GM-M

First off, has anyone used either board? Good, bad? The Gigabyte is the same price if you consider rebates, but their specs are damn near identical. Gigabyte would be my instinctive choice. Thoughts?

Secondly (noob question here :ohwell: ), with onboard ATi video (both boards are AMD740G) I should be able to use a DVI adapter to output HDMI just as with the discrete videocards, correct?

You can't really go wrong with either one but I personally would go with the gigabyte :D

I have the gigabyte board on my WCG machine working hard 24/7 with my 45w X2 BE 2400. The cool thing about the board is it allows to under volt the proc. I have under volted the proc to 1.1v with default 2.3Ghz speed and be working from day one when I turned it on 24/7 100% for almost 30 days now. So I would highly recommend this board.

I installed the ECS board on my friend/client's machine and its been stable with a X4 9750 stable for 6 months now. Not good with OCing tho.

I would say pick the Gigabye as it has coaxial output if you are going to use it for media center purposes.

that onboard is good for 720P, yes it can do DVI to HDMI. But if you want 1080P I would say get a cheap ATI 4xxx low watt series and be done with it.

I would say get a 780G or GF 8200/8300 board.

Thanks suraswami, that's exactly the kind of firsthand knowledge I was looking for. Looks like if I do end up getting a new mobo for this build it'll be the Gigabyte :rockout:

And yes, I'd love a 780G but I'm trying to be as low-budget as possible. I'll throw a single-slot 4XXX in there if I ever need more than the onboard.

if you are not going to watch Blue ray then the 740g should be fine.

ehh... I don't know, the only MSI product I ever used was a mATX mobo and it was a gigantic piece of crap. In retrospect I should have RMA'd it as it was probably defective, and I know that one bad experience doesn't mean the brand is garbage; but it sort of demotivates me from repeat business.

not to mention +$40 by the time shipping is in there.
