As long as you have a free four pin molex connector it will work. :)

Can you look at the motherboard? If you can usually underneath the PCI/expansion slots is the motherboard model. It would be helpful.

I would think the board handles the AGP8x since it handles 800/1066 ram. Still most older cards, specifically a 'Low Profile' card I mentioned doesn't draw much power anyways.

Low profile cards are meant to fit into small desktop or home theater PC's. You don't really need one, but you can install one in your PC and it won't hurt a thing.

But before you consider buying anything, we need to know what you mean by you "can't even start my pc." Does it do anything at all? Do any lights come on or flash? Does it make any beeps? If it does absolutely nothing, then you probably have bigger problems than just a video card.

QUESTION 1
How do you know that the GPU "went"? Please say a little more. You might be spending money fixing the wrong thing. A sh1tty PSU or aging voltage regulators or failed caps could bring down a Northbridge or GPU, while the card itself is OK. Did you test the 9700 elsewhere? It is worth checking.

PS. The 9700 is a great card, and since the drivers are already installed, why not just get a replacement on ebay? Cheap.

QUESTION 2
What do you use your PC for? And your GPU? 2D desktop or 3D games. And what kind of monitor do you have? There may be better solutions than getting a new AGP onto your old RDRAM based P4.

Vertical stripes going DOWN the screen can be GPU failure or TFT failure. Zig-zags or repeated patterns is 100% GPU failure. But with coloured verticals it is 50/50 the TFT or the GPU.

Yes, it is clear it isnt drivers. And yes, maybe it IS the GPU, but have you checked the monitor on another PC?

  • Please answer my previous questions.
  • Please fill in your system specs.

No more help until above completed. i HATE timewasters who are too lazy to give the full picture/situation but still expect people to spend time helping them.

Ok here are the specs, gateway e-6000 512 mb of ram, the old one i would like to upgrade that in the future, intel p4 2.66 ghz i believe, my motherboard its INTEL D85OEMV2 CHIPSET i850e. It had the 9700. Its defintally the video card i called ati and they said its a bad memory chip, it went bad. I ended up ordering the hd 2400 agp by powercolor. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814131149
I will let you know if it works. It does require 300 watts but i called ati and they said that it should work. And the gpu should use no more than xx watts.

Good luck. I hope it works.

"pink and green lines across the screen" (is that vertical or horizontal?). Vertical stripes, going top to bottom, and unbroken, and repeated evenly every few cm is a sign of bad memory on the GPU. Horizontal stripes are usually a TFT problem. Irregular vertical stripes are usually TFT. A "pattern" like a repeated artifact shifted and copied all over the screen is definitely GPU.

So I hope your new HD2400 solves the problem!

If, as you say, "pink and green lines across the screen" = horizontal stripes then I think your TFT is the issue.
